Charmian is handmaiden to Cleopatra. She is also an oracle, gifted with ancient memories that may hold the key to preserving Egypt. Through blood and fire, war and peace, love and death, she will face a desperate struggle that will remake the future of the world.

Shortlisted for the Locus Best First Novel Award, included in The Amazon Editors' Top Ten List in Science Fiction and Fantasy for 2008 and the Locus Recommended Reading List, with starred reviews in Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews, Jo Graham is one of the most exciting new voices to come out of historical fantasy in recent years.

"once again, I love how Graham takes you back in time with her books, and I like getting the perspective of Cleopatra's handmaid because it gives you a bit of insight of why Cleopatra acted the way she did, and not just because she was a "meddlesome slut" like my professors would lead us to believe."

" I liked this even better than Black Ships. Same high quality of writing and scholarly knowledge but the plotting was smoother and the characters more sympathetic and relatable. Very enjoyable! "

" I really liked Ms. Graham's first novel, "Black Ships", but I was disappointed in this one, mostly because of the explicit sex that I did my best to skip. Ms. Graham seems to have a thing for men who swing both ways and women who accept such behavior from the men they love. That element was present in her first book but much more so in this one. I doubt I'd have finished the book had I just gotten it out of the library. "

" This book was completely fantastic. I loved Graham's take on Cleopatra and Egyptian magic. In this book you really step back in time and walk the streets of the greatest city of the classical world: Alexandria. "

" I didn't like this one as much as Black Ship. The vitality of the era was there and I liked reading about Cleopatra but I found myself bored and not very into the story. It had kind of a blah blah blah feel for me. "

" There aren't many books that I absolutely cannot get enough of, but Graham consistently writes them. This is the second in her series and probably my favorite so far. The characters are amazingly real and the storytelling draws me in. Graham is definitely proving to be one of my favorite authors. "

" A good sophomore turn from the author of Black Ships, Graham's latest moves from Greece to Egypt, treating Cleopatra as an incarnation of Isis, along with her two half-sisters. Interesting and entertaining - a good entry in the genre of fantasy based on ancient history. "
