Publisher Description

Great Scenes from Great Plays offered some of the finest performers of the twentieth century in adaptations of some of the best plays ever to be presented. Hosted by veteran actor/producer Walter Hampden, the series drew upon the many stars then appearing in plays along with Great White Way. Despite attracting top names, however, the series did not succeed in gaining a sponsor and was cancelled after just one well-received season. Now, a series that offers a unique glimpse into the rarified world of the New York theater had a second life thanks to Radio Archives, which offers twenty beautifully restored episodes in this collection, taken directly from original transcription recordings for outstanding audio fidelity.

Cyrano de Bergerac, The Corn Is Green, The Barretts of Wimpole Street, Dark Victory, Little Women, A Tale of Two Cities, The Enchanted Cottage, What Every Woman Knows, The Devil and Daniel Webster, The Old Lady Shows Her Medals, Young Mr. Lincoln, You and I, The Citadel, The Farmer Takes a Wife, Icebound, The Goose Hangs High, The World We Make, Dead End, A Doll’s House, and The Lady with a Lamp.

About various authors

Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker and a washerwoman. As a young teenager, he became quite well known in Odense as a reciter of drama and as a singer. When he was fourteen, he set off for the capital, Copenhagen, determined to become a national success on the stage. He failed miserably, but made some influential friends in the capital who got him into school to remedy his lack of proper education. In 1829 his first book was published. After that, books came out at regular intervals. His stories began to be translated into English as early as 1846. Since then, numerous editions, and more recently Hollywood songs and Disney cartoons, have helped to ensure the continuing popularity of the stories in the English-speaking world.
