Publisher Description

The first in an alternate fantasy series where vampires, werewolves, and goblins rule London.

Queen Victoria rules with an immortal fist.

The undead matriarch presides over a Britain where the Aristocracy is made up of werewolves and vampires, where goblins live underground and mothers know better than to let their children out after dark. It's a world where the nobility are infected with the Plague (side-effects include undeath), Hysteria is the popular affliction of the day, and leeches are considered a delicacy. And a world where technology lives side by side with magic. The year is 2012 and Pax Britannia still reigns.

Xandra Vardan is a member of the elite Royal Guard, and it is her duty to protect the Aristocracy. But when her sister goes missing, Xandra will set out on a path that undermines everything she believed in and uncover a conspiracy that threatens to topple the empire. And she is the key -- the prize -- in a very dangerous struggle.

The fantastic start to The Immortal Empire series that continues with the spectacular undead books, The Queen is Dead and Long Live the Queen.

"I enjoyed this book a great deal. Granted it may not be fully steampunk like some people would classify it as, but it has the elements of it along with the supernatural vampires and werewolves. When I first read the back of this book I thought "how the hell can all of these elements be in the same book successfully?" But once you start reading it, it works very well and draws you in deeper with each chapter. The characters are very well done and the descriptions of the locations are such that you can feel like your walking through 1800's England with them. I am now anxiously awaiting book 2!"

" I found this book to be hard to put down. I got really into it because it is two of my favorite genres in one it's steam punk and horror all at the same time. Which is not something I find a lot of I now need to buy book two and three of this series so I can finish reading it. "

" Not bad--could have been better if the author had gone more in depth with the characters. I probably won't read the sequel. "

" This book was very well done. I really enjoyed this book it did not contain overly sexual situations that are all the rage for adult fantasy books. Yes sex is mentioned but if you want the details then you need not read this book. The author focus on the emotional relationship between the characters and not the sexual parts of it. I thought that this was just very refreshing to read because wow a paranormal adult book that wasn't all about sex what a concept. This book had a lot of depth to the characters. I will be reading the next book in this series as soon as I can get my hands on it. "

" "God Save the Queen" starts off a little slow -- but stick with it, because it is a rollicking good time. This is how vampire/werewolf fiction should be: a little raunchy, super clever, sexy. "

" This was a much quicker read that I thought it would be and it was really good. I am quite enamoured of the idea of Queen Victoria being a vampire and still ruling Britain in 2012. Now comes the long wait for the sequel in February. Also, goblins! "

" Labeled as a steampunk... Hmmmm... Had a little elements of steampunk but not what I'm use too. Take the steampunk expectations out of it and it was not a bad book to read. I really like the take on setting a historical in the present time. "

" A good, well written UF read, not steampunk as I expected. There were no fantastical steam powered gadgets, just familiar ones with different names. The book is set in England and the author did a good job with the 'British' voice, not far off the mark as some similar books I've read. "

About Kate Locke

Kate Locke is a shameless Anglophile who wrote her first book at age twelve. Fortunately, that book about a British pop band is lost forever. During “off” hours Kate often screeches along to Rock Band (being a rock star was her second career choice if the writing thing didn’t work out), watches BBC America, or plays with makeup. She loves history, the paranormal, horror, and sparkly things.
