Plot Summary

Though in the generation of technology lives can be exposed in an instant, one place can hide secrets and the darkest of crimes, particularly when passion is involved. Where else but the heart? In the drizzling rain splayed against the sidewalk, the first victim is discovered by Eve Dallas, our protagonist and crime solver. In the confines and intimacy of her own apartment, the second victim is found murdered.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas sees an immediate connection between the two victims: they are gorgeous and their lives are extraordinarily successful. Or, were. Once the talk of the town, the lovers these women have taken could be numerous, among them men of prestige and riches, including Eve´s own man Roarke.

Naturally, Eve wants to trust the lover she has shared her bed with, yet it is her duty as a policewoman to follow every lead to its end, to investigate ever whisper of scandal, to uncover every hidden desire, no matter where it takes her, or how dangerous these matters of the heart become.

J. D. Robb is the pseudonym Nora Roberts uses when writing the In Death series. She has sold hundreds of millions of copies of her work, and is a veteran author on the New York Times best-seller list. Born in 1950, she was the youngest and only daughter of five children. Though born in Maryland, both her parents are Irish, and she considers herself an "Irish woman, through and through".

"Loved this book as much as the 1st. Important to read in order I think, but its worth reading. Don't want to miss any interaction between the characters. Great development of character lines and plot. Never know what Robb is going to throw your way."

Publisher Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author  J. D. Robb presents the thrilling second novel in her In Death series. When technology can reveal the darkest of secrets, there’s only one place to hide a crime of passion—in the heart…

The first victim was found lying on a sidewalk in the rain. The second was murdered in her own apartment building. Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas had no problem finding connections between the two crimes. Both victims were beautiful and highly successful women. Their glamorous lives and loves were the talk of the city. And their intimate relations with men of great power and wealth provided Eve with a long list of suspects—including her own lover, Roarke. As a woman, Eve was compelled to trust the man who shared her bed. But as a cop, it was her job to follow every lead…to investigate every scandalous rumor…to explore every secret passion, no matter how dark. Or how dangerous.
