James is not pleased with his family's move to the bleak fen country of East Anglia, where he is regarded as an incomer at his new school. He finds making friends hard, except for Angey, who is an incomer herself. But there's old Gaffer Samson, ill in bed in the next-door cottage, who needs James to help him by finding his 'luck' - an old charm given to him years before.
