The first in a mesmerizing four-book original series, Prodigal Son is a brilliant re-imagining and updating of the classic Frankenstein story that only Dean Koontz could conceive. Two hundred years old, the monster, Deucalion, is a monster no more. Literate and intelligent, he arrives in modern-day New Orleans, where he will join forces with a street-smart police detective and her partner on the trail of a macabre serial killer...a serial killer spawned, Deucalion will discover, by his own creator, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, now Victor Helios. Now Deucalion will find that there are many others like him, that they live among us at every strata of society, and that his nemesis, Victor Frankenstein, has survived the centuries as well, and dreams of seeding the earth with his creations. " I read this on the plane. It is a typical Dean Koontz read. Quick, exciting and page turning. But, a typical Dean Koontz read lacks characters and any major turmoil therein. "

" I'm a big Dean Koontz fan, and this is one of the best I've read of his. He's at his best when his "monsters" are human, and this is one of those cases. Creepy, intriguing, exciting, and thought-provoking. I couldn't put it down. "

" This was interesting. A lot darker than I thought it would be. I enjoyed the concept, hated that some bits were kind of...off. But in the end I enjoyed it. I liked that I read the original Frankenstein before I allowed myself to read this, but it is not necessary to do so. "

" This was a book on tape that I heard, so I quess that counts towards reading it. Scott Brick read the book (he is great to listen to). Dean Koontz takes the old story and makes it modern day. This is part one of a series, so the story will continue on. "

" It was a great take on the story of Frankenstein. Koontz added to the legend in a believable way and kept it moving through the entire series. I would recommend this book to any of Koontz's fans. "

" I listened to this one. It is an entertaining sequel to the Frankenstein mythology, bringing the famous Dr. into current times. Prodigal Son has a cliff-hanger ending, so it's necessary to keep going into at least the second title in the series. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Heather | 6/2/2011

" This was unexpected from Dean Koontz, but in a good way. I enjoyed it and would have given it 3 and 1/2 stars if it would have let me. If you like Dean Koontz or the Frankentstein legend then you'll definitely enjoy this. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Steve | 5/29/2011

" This was a good book.. I am now hooked into the series.. I have heard it was pretty good, but did not ever get around to reading it.. I am glad that I have finally started.. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lesley | 5/28/2011

" I've always enjoyed Dean Koontz, this is no exception. This was just as suspense filled as most of his others. First of a series about a man who gets the nickname Frankenstein. He has started creating a "new race" of mankind. Looking forward to the second in the series. "
