In a fractured realm, struggling to maintain an uneasy peace after years of civil war and religious tyranny, a 12-year-old orphan and her loyal companion, a large and homicidal goose, are about to become the unlikely heroes of a revolution.

Mosca Mye has spent her life in a miserable hamlet, where her father was banished for writing inflammatory books about tolerance and freedom. Now he is dead, and Mosca is on the run, in search of a better life. With Eponymous Clent, a smooth-tongued swindler, she heads for the city of Mandelion, living by her wits among highwaymen and smugglers, dangerously insane rulers, secret agents, and radical plotters.

But the city is in uproar, for someone is once again printing seditious material, and no one is quite what they seem. With suspicion and peril at every turn, Mosca uncovers a shocking plot to force a rule of terror on the people of the Realm, and all too soon merry mayhem leads to murder.

Funny, surprising and fantastical, with an unforgettable cast of characters, Fly By Night contains at its heart an inspiring truth: that the power of books can change the world.

" ugh. eew. i really didn't like this book. i felt like the plot has been done a a gazillion times before. (GASP!!! WHAT IF BOOKS WERE BANNED?!) the main character was really really annoying, and i hated the stupid goose. gah. "

" Although this book never grabbed me (2 & a half weeks to read a book?! Sacrilege!), I quite enjoyed what it was doing. A good read, especially for impressionable minds. "

" I wish I could have liked this book more, the writing was superb, but I think I started reading it at the wrong time. The political nature of the plot was a bit much to take just a week after the 2012 presidential elections. "

" I read this a long time ago, about 5 years, and don't remember a good bit of the story, but I do remember some scenes of her running through the streets and I believe on a house boat. And I do remember it was one of the most entertaining books I red at that time. I would highly recommend it. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Erra | 1/7/2013

" I couldn't finish this book, the pacing was much too slow and nothing happened in the first half that I did slog through. This is saying a lot since I do not like to leave books unfinished. Maybe one day I'll go back and re-read it if I feel the urge, but I highly doubt it. "

" I *love* this book! The story was clever, the characters were endearing, the world was well-thought. I found the themes of the tale to be welcome and, as Colin would say, quite friendly. Overall, this book is very much recommended. A fun adventure! "

" Quirky characters and an original idea. I liked t - didn't love it - but it's the sort of story that stays with you, with a world that keeps you there. The protagonist, Mosca Mye, is absolute joy of a character. "

" A witty, fun read with some mystery and adventure. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and wordplay. An example: each chapter is entitled after a letter of the alphabet, ie, "A is for Arson" is chapter one. Anyway, lots of fun. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Beth | 4/25/2011

" such vivid, livley characters, such a natural yet artfully fun plot, such lovely writing. Even though I strongly feel this world was inspired by Lloyd Alexander's Westmark, I didn't mind. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Julia | 4/16/2011

" It was so confusing and a little hard to get into. But what I did get I liked. Plus it was interesting that it was sort of relating to the time in Britain when the monarch was the most powerful with a fun-ish twist to it. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Lauren Elena | 3/27/2011

" Funny, brisk-paced read. A bad poet spouting "oh, painted smirk of a hopeless dawn" & other funny head-scratchers. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Karen | 1/23/2011

" A cute book with fun twists. For me, the world where written words are controlled is a scary place. It's sad to think that there are such places in this world even now... "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jenny | 1/18/2011

" This was a really wonderful book. Her words are almost poetic, with a real gift for description. Also a good kids eye view for politic, religion and how power corrupt them all. "
