Faith Mitchell's instincts are sharp. Perhaps too sharp. She was supposed to pick up her infant baby at noon, but no answer greets her when she calls her mother's house. She knows her mother doesn't leave the house without letting someone know, especially with a baby in tow. Something's wrong, very wrong...and Faith knows this. She comes home to find a crime scene in the kitchen, a spattering of blood on the kitchen door, a hostage in the bedroom, and her mother? Her mother is nowhere to be found. Faith is used to crime, but not to this. This time, she's not just the cop, she's the victim...and there aren't enough answers in the world to answer this one for her.

Slaughter's relatable characters and twisting plot are sure to be a hit both for new readers and for fans of her other series. As readers of all ages follow Faith's journey, questions will arise, only to produce new ones. By the end, we're left wondering: will she ever be able to get back to normal? The book is a sure hit for any lover of suspense.

Karin Slaughter is an American crime writer, most famous for her internationally-acclaimed novel Blindsided. She also wrote two series, one set in Atlanta under the name Will Trent, and one set in Georgia's Grant County under the name of Grant County. She's also written several books combining the two series. She is currently part of a 'save the libraries' event geared toward saving the Dekalb County Public Library in Dekalb, Georgia.

There’s no police training stronger than a cop’s instinct.

Faith Mitchell’s mother isn’t answering her phone. Her front door is open. There’s a bloodstain above the knob. Everything Faith learned in the academy goes out the window when she charges into her mother’s house, gun drawn. She sees a man dead in the laundry room, a hostage situation in the bedroom. What she doesn’t see is her mother. When the hostage situation turns deadly, Faith is left with too many questions. She’ll need the help of her partner, Will Trent, and trauma doctor Sara Linton to get some answers. But Faith isn’t just a cop anymore, she’s a witness—and a suspect. To find her mother, Faith will have to cross the thin blue line and bring the truth to light—or bury it forever.

Quotes & Awards

  • “Her story is expertly written, exhaustively researched, steeped in police lore, deeply rooted in the author’s native Georgia and exceedingly violent. Slaughter has a rare ability to balance violence with a compassionate view of her complex and all-too-human characters.”

    Washington Post

  • “An amazing effort. This is Slaughter’s best book to date, and readers unfamiliar with her work will find this one a perfect place to begin.”

    Associated Press

  • “You can’t dismiss the growth of Slaughter’s talent. She has always been a good writer but of late she has become an exemplary storyteller, weaving her words with skill and intelligence. Fallen is a prime example of her talent.”

    Huffington Post

  • “In what might be her best effort yet, Slaughter reveals the heart and soul of her characters within a highly choreographed, unrelentingly suspenseful plot.”

    Booklist (starred review)

  • Winner of an AudioFile Earphones Award
  • New York Times Bestseller
  • A 2011 Washington Post Notable Book for Fiction

" I just don't like writing bad reviews, but although It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. Wasn't really impressed with the big reveal at the end. It just didn't feel plausible or believable. I really liked another novel by this author, Pretty Girls. THAT one was amazing and kept me hanging on every word, so I will be faithful and listen to others by this author. This one just didn't do it for me, it might for someone else! "

" I really wanted to like this book but I'm so disappointed with it. I found this book tiring although it's quite easy to read, the story seems so predictable. I found this book so American, Hollywood cheesy style and racist in some way (maybe it's just me). Sadly I won't read any of her books again. "

" this book was more interesting about personal lives of the characters unless the story itself. In this book we learn about faith's family ,about the relationship between will trent and his wife angie trent and for the first time in this series we learn about the strong feelings of sara linton for will trent. We learn that faith is adupted child from evelyn mitchel something that reminds me that even faith has a very troubled past.in this book we learn about try of will trent to cut himself to when was in the foster housewhen was child for saving angie.about the main events of the book i thing that this book isn't the best of the series and for this reason i gave 3 stars only. " The book was good and at last Sarah is coming out of her shell and hopefully Angie gets flicked. The book says a lot about today's society how much kids have changed through the generations. The kids in this book spoke volumes of just how violent some have become, which is very sad. "
