Ray Corson came to Hollywood to be a screenwriter, not hired muscle. But when a beautiful girl with a purse full of cash asks for your help, how can you say no? So Corson agrees to protect starlet Rebecca LaFontaine from a vengeful mobster - but what he doesn't realize is that he'll have to join the Mob to do it.

" I got exactly what I wanted out of it - a fun throwback to old pulp novels. It hits all the obligatory beats and throws in most of the tropes of this genre, but it's not disingenuous. Phillips clearly has a great affection for the classic hard-boiled mysteries and it makes the whole thing feel nostalgic rather than cliche. "

" Fade to Blonde is wonderful. Enjoy it on a nice afternoon on your porch or lawn or on the can. Where ever you do your best reading. Not the best cover though. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Bruce | 1/24/2014

" This 2004 novel is packaged as if it were a reprint of a noir/crime novel from the 50s. A reasonably decent read it is, but that it isn't. The protagonist is more of a noble superhero type than an ignoble anti-hero, and the heroine comes off more as a confused little girl in a woman's body than a seductive temptress. "

" A decent pulp exercise of girl hires guy to kill another guy which has its twists and turns set against the mobster backdrop of drugs and pornography in early 1960's Los Angeles. Not overly memorable, but fun. "
