The crime was committed on stage at the Unicorn Theatre, when an unloaded gun fired a very real bullet; the victim was Arthur Surbonadier, an actor clawing his way to stardom using blackmail instead of talent; the suspects included two unwilling girlfriends and several relieved blackmail victims. The stage was set for one of Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn's most baffling cases.

From 'the doyenne of traditional mystery writers' (New York Times) comes classic British crime writing in the vein of Agatha Christie and Margery Allingham.

" Fun theatre based mystery in golden age, 1935. Well written and Allyn is individual character. "

" The early Roderick Alleyn books are so wonderful. This one is set in a play. A man is murdered onstage while the Inspector sits in the front row. Felix Gardiner shoots his rival in love Arthur Surbonardier onstage. Was it an error? Who wanted Arthur to die (hint: just about everyone onstage). Fast read, loved the characters. Will probably read again in a few years. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 by Ana | 2/16/2014

" It was ok. Nothing special. The murderer is pretty obvious from the beginning so there-s no real mystery. "

" The murder takes place on stage in full view of the audience, but who loaded the gun? Good mystery and Marsh's love of the theater is obvious. "
