Publisher Description

New York City’s Alphabet City is a magnet for desperate hustlers, con men, and last-chance addicts. Payton Sherwood knows that scene. But Payton also lives by a white-knight creed derived from the heroes of Golden Age detective fiction. And like those renowned hardboiled private eyes, he is riddled with loss—the loss of an old love who still exists in daydreams, and the loss of a city he barely recognizes.

Payton takes a wrong turn on a side street and stumbles into trouble in the form of three bull-necked heavies and a tough sixteen-year-old runaway named Gloria Manlow. After taking a savage beating, he tracks Gloria through Alphabet City, where the shadows that frighten aren’t those that shade the street, but rather the soul. Payton’s dusk-to-dawn nightmare on the wild side is about to begin—and nothing will stop it but death.

"A good book. Well written and rather fast paced novel. "

Quotes

  • “[Atwood’s] place descriptions are clearly, even beautifully focused, and his tawdry locales are inhabited by characters who are not only fascinating to study but also real enough to look back at you.”

    — New York Times Book Review
  • “The characters are quirky, the dialogue smart and fast, the action relentless.”

    — Los Angeles Times
  • “Remarkable…Acute suspense…The tension torques up as the body count rises.”

    — Houston Chronicle
  • “Readers nostalgic for the shabby PI with the manly integrity of Bogart will cheer the debut of Atwood and his ’90s noir hero…The narration pulses with verve and threat, and through Payton’s vividly rendered voice readers will know the sweat, lust and fear.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Good suspense, plenty of action, and great local color add up to a winner. How long before Payton rides again?”

    — Kirkus Reviews
