Dyb foregår i Sverige under Første Verdenskrig. Lars-Tobias Svartmann er marineofficer og søopmåler. Han gennemsejler den svenske skærgård for at lodde dybder og finde ruter til den svenske flåde, for det tilfælde Sverige skulle blive involveret i krigen. På et af de yderste skær møder han en fiskerenke, der lever i total isolation. Han indleder et forhold til hende, som efterhånden trækker ham ned i et evigt voksende net af løgne. Løgne, som med tiden afslører uheldssvangre dybder i Svartmann selv, og som med tiden fører overfald, bedrag, mord og vanvid med sig.

Dyb er først og fremmest en psykologisk thriller, men den er mere end det: I en umiskendeligt nordisk tone sammenvæver den et stykke dramatisk svensk historie med en enestående beretning om menneskeligt forfald.
