Publisher Description

For the first time in more than three years, bestselling authors Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey, mother and son, have teamed up again to do what they do best: add a fresh chapter to the most beloved science fiction series of all time, the Dragonriders of Pern. Even though Lorana cured the plague that was killing the dragons of Pern, sacrificing her queen dragon in the process, the effects of the disease were so devastating that there are no longer enough dragons available to fight the fall of deadly Thread. And as the situation grows more dire, a pregnant Lorana decides that she must take drastic steps in the quest for help. Meanwhile, back at Telgar Weyr, Weyrwoman Fiona, herself pregnant, and the harper Kindan must somehow keep morale from fading altogether in the face of the steadily mounting losses of dragons and their riders. But time weighs heavily against them — until Lorana finds a way to use time itself in their favor. It’s a plan fraught with risk, however. For attempting time travel means tampering with the natural laws of the universe, which could drastically alter history — and destiny — forever. Or so it has always been thought. But Lorana discovers that if the laws of time can’t be broken without consequences, it may still be possible to bend them. To ensure the future of Pern, she’s willing to take the fateful chance — even if it demands another, even greater, sacrifice.

"A great addition to the world of Pern. The author does a great job to make the world real for the reader. The characters are very likable and humorous at times which makes the book appealing to the reader. This is a great series that anyone would easily get sucked into and love."

" The time jumping was much too confusing. It detracted from the plot, and I was too confused to enjoy the story. And again, it seemed like a repeat of some of Anne McCaffrey's previous plots. "

" I could have used someone with a degree in temporal mechanics to help me with this one. The characters are like able enough, but the story itself... Far too much crammed into what, comparatively, is a short book. "

" I have read this book twice now. It continues the story of Fiona, Lorana, Kindan, and the others in the past Pern books that Todd McCaffrey wrote. It was very good. There are a lot of twists in this book. "

" As much as I love Pern, I'm just not loving these more recent efforts. I can hardly get a handle on the characters - most of them don't have strong enough personalities for me to keep them straight! Some aspects of this book were better than the previous few, but I was not a fan of the abrupt ending. Fingers crossed that the next one shows more improvement! "

" I am so disappointed I could scream. I love the dragonbooks, but Todd McCaffrey has taken this successful universe and destroyed it for me. This book in particular is rife with dropped names and past events with no accompanying context. For someone who hasn't read the previous books in a while (like me), most of the book was confusing and pointless. The only reason I keep reading his books is because I really really want to know what happens with the characters. I'm going to have to turn to Fan Fiction instead to get my dose of Pern. "

" This was pretty awful. The only reason it gets two stars is because I listened to it during a road trip and it was pretty entertaining in it's awfulness. "

" Thank goodness it's over! Todd loses sight of what makes the Pernicious novels so great- their simplicity. The plot and dialogue are convoluted and confusing, and it's clear where Anne's influence enters, to reign Todd in. "

" I thought this one had more depth to the characters. Since Todd has started writing, this is one thing I have felt lacking. This story touched me. A little confusing for me at first, but I think that was because it had been a while since I had read the previous book. "

" If you haven't read the previous books in this Pern series you will be lost. I've read the first 2 and I was almost lost. There is a LOT of timing it in this book and it is hard to keep track of who is when and where. Maybe I just read it too fast but I had a hard time following the story line. "

" This is the first book that I've read that was written by Todd McCaffrey and it was excellent. I've been a big fan of the Pern series, and virtually everything that Anne McCaffrey has written, since I first encountered the books back in the 80's. "

" It not that I have anything against Todd, I just don't feel he has quite the same understanding of his characters that his mother did. The books he co-authored are just a little flatter than the originals. If you are new to Pern, don't start here. If you are revisiting, it's worth a read. "
