Publisher Description

Young Fiona, rider of the gold queen Talenth, has returned from the past, where she and a group of dragons and riders fled so that the wounded could heal from their previous battles. Gone only three days, yet aged more than three years, Fiona is no longer a child but a woman prepared to fight against the Thread that threatens to destroy her world. Fiona’s life takes a pivotal turn when a shocking tragedy thrusts her into a position of authority. Now she finds herself leading weyrfolk who have a hard time trusting a senior Weyrwoman who is both young and an outsider. But even greater challenges lie ahead: Thread is falling and there are too few dragons to stem the tide. Many have died from the recent plague, and even with the influx of newly mature dragons from the past, the depleted fighting force is no match for the intensifying Threadfall. Fiona knows that something must be done, and what she proposes is daring and next to impossible. But if her plan succeeds, it just might save them all.

"I love the PERN books. All of them. That being said, if you have not experienced the PERN universe, do not start with this book. This book is transitional. It is the middle piece of a bigger story, and has an ending that is not an ending. Needless to say, I cannot wait for the next book. "

" Filler, Fluff, and Ridiculousness. Don't bother. There's no story there. Highly dissapointed in what they've done to the Pern series. Read the early ones, but don't bother with these. "

" I wasn't keen on this latest Pern offering. Todd doesn't write anywhere nearly as coherently as his mother, and he is far too full of doom 'n' gloom. A little light would be nice! "

" Good story and good continuity with the novels of the past. The ending feels a bit rushed though, especially as compared to the detailed character and plot development that occurred throughout the rest of the book. "

" This book is very disjointed. I had trouble finding the story. I also had a problem with the relationships given the ages of the characters. I know Pern is its own world but, really, Todd is writting for our world and these kinds of relationships for a 16 year old is kind of creepy. "

" I like the Pern books, this one is a bit confusing, and ends with a cliffhanger, which I generally do not like. Luckily I had the next one ready to go or I would have liked it less. Worth ending, though for Pern fans. "

" My one complaint is that it was a cliff-hanger, leading into the next book. Other than that, I loved it. The characters are wonderful, their emotional struggles and physical hardships engrossing. I cried pretty much throughout this book--someone was always dying--but I loved it anyway. "
