About various authors
Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker and a washerwoman. As a young teenager, he became quite well known in Odense as a reciter of drama and as a singer. When he was fourteen, he set off for the capital, Copenhagen, determined to become a national success on the stage. He failed miserably, but made some influential friends in the capital who got him into school to remedy his lack of proper education. In 1829 his first book was published. After that, books came out at regular intervals. His stories began to be translated into English as early as 1846. Since then, numerous editions, and more recently Hollywood songs and Disney cartoons, have helped to ensure the continuing popularity of the stories in the English-speaking world.
About the Narrators
James Langton, an Earphones Award–winning narrator, trained as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and later as a musician at the Guildhall School in London. He has worked in radio, film, and television, also appearing in theater in England and on Broadway. He is also a professional musician who led the internationally renowned Pasadena Roof Orchestra from 1996 to 2002.
Andy Lane has written a number of well-reviewed novels based
on various television series, including Doctor Who. In addition, he has
written ten nonfiction books on various aspects of film and television, eleven
original short stories for various magazines and anthologies, and a television
script for Sky One.
William Russell was born in Sunderland, County Durham. He became
interested in acting at an early age and was involved with organizing
entertainment during his time with the Royal Air Force. He appeared in Hamlet in London’s West End and went on
to appear in a number of films and television shows, including The Great Escape, Doctor Who, and Superman.
David Troughton is an English actor who is known for his
Shakespearean roles on the British stage and for his many roles on British
television, including Dr. Bob Buzzard in A
Very Peculiar Practice and Ricky Hanson in New Tricks. He lives in London with his wife, Ali.
Katy Manning is a British actress who has appeared in numerous films and television series. She is best known for her role as Jo Grant in seventy-seven episodes of Doctor Who in the early 1970s.
Louise
Jameson is a British actress who has appeared widely on
both the stage and screen. She is perhaps best known for her role as the Fourth
Doctor’s companion in the hit sci-fi series Doctor
Who. Her other credits include EastEnders,
Bergerac, and Doc Martin.
Peter Davison portrayed the fifth incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who from 1981 to 1984. More recently he starred in the television series The Last Detective, based on the Dangerous Davies novels by Leslie Thomas, and Distant Shores for ITV. In 2011 he took a major recurring role on Law & Order: UK. In addition to acting, he is also a songwriter and has provided the themes to Button Moon and My Hero.
Sophie Aldred is an English actress and television presenter best
known for her role as Ace in the popular BBC television series
Doctor Who during the late 1980s.
India Fisher is a British actress and voice artist. She has appeared in the television series Dead Ringers and provided the voice for the character of Sophia Winchell in the BBC animated webcast series Ghosts of Albion. She narrates BBC One’s cookery program MasterChef and performs voice-overs for television advertisements. She has also appeared in several episodes of the BBC Radio 4 comedy series Elephants to Catch Eels and has provided voices on a number of science-fiction audio dramas.
