A NEWBERRY MEDAL WINNER

Keeping her family together is what thirteen-year-old Dicey does best. But now that all four Tillerman children have found a new home with their grandmother, Dicey has to learn the hard lesson of letting go. Dicey's got other problems than finding her new role in the family: she's bored with everyone and everything at school and doesn't think anyone can tell her anything she wants to know. But slowly, Dicey discovers that everyone has something to teach, and life is a lesson that doesn't get easier . . .

"This is second in a series of books about the Tillerman children, whose mother Liza is in a mental hospital and whose Grandmother takes over care of the children. This is one of the books where the story is in the white spaces between the words. It's replete with undercurrents that come eddying through the short, blunt comments made by the four veru individual children and the few friends that they have made. It's a story told in the silences. Bad things happen. You let go and hold on. good things happen, too, if you look for them. And pizza is oozy."

" I remember really liking this when I was younger, and it held up pretty well. I wish had been able torn-read Homecoming first (the first book in this series) but I remembered everything. One of my not disappointing classic YA re-reads. "

" I read this after enjoying The Homecoming. Even now, as an adult, I find myself remembering tidbits from The Homecoming, but I hardly remember this sequel at all. I guess the thrill of the adventure was over for me. I might have viewed this book differently had I read Dicey's Song first. Maybe I'll have to go back and re-read it. "

" Cynthia Voight has created a thoughtful piece of literature, telling of Dicey, whose complexities far outweigh those of the average 13-year-old. She paints incredible pictures of the life of Dicey and her family with flowing, descriptive prose; the book would not be the same without it. "
