Publisher Description

When two young women are murdered on the streets of New York, exactly one year apart, Detective Ellie Hatcher is called up for a special assignment on the homicide task force. The killer has left behind a clue connecting the two cases to FirstDate.com, a popular online dating service, and Flann McIlroy, an eccentric, publicity-seeking homicide detective, is convinced that only Ellie can help him pursue his terrifying theory: someone is using the lure of the internet and the promise of love to launch a killing spree against the women of New York City. To catch the killer, Ellie must enter a high-tech world of stolen identities where no one is who they appear to be. And for her, the investigation quickly becomes personal. She fits the profile of the victims, and she knows firsthand what pursuing a sociopath can do to a cop - back home in Wichita, Kansas, her own father lost his life trying to catch a notorious serial murderer. When the FirstDate killer begins to mimic the monster who destroyed her father, Ellie knows the game has become personal for him, too. Both hunter and prey, she knows her only choice is to find the killer before he claims his next victim - who could very well be Ellie herself.

"this was a good book! This was the first book I've read by the author and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I will be picking up the next book in the series as soon as I go to the Public Library tomorrow. The suspense was great with a few unexpected twists. Plus, she left an opening for the next book just perfectly!"

" This is the second Ellie Hatcher book I've read, even though it's the first in the series. I read two in one weekend and that might have been the problem. Maybe it was the distraction of Hurricane Sandy... or the ads for a new Bond film on TV ... either way, I got lost somewhere in all the characters and thought I would just ride it out and enjoy the story, knowing Ellie would live to be in future stories. Embarrassing as it is to admit, I am still not 100% sure who did what and why, but it was a bit like the first time I saw a sci-fi movie... just go with momentary confusion and hope that good triumphs in the end. I like Ellie and her brother, and look forward to more of the series. Just not too many at once;) "

" Entertaining, for the first book in a new mystery series. I particularly enjoyed the connections that the main character, Ellie, shares with her family. It makes her seem real. "

" I needed something light to read in between heavier things, and though I didn't expect much from this book, it surprised me. It's quick, easy, and captivating. I've been a fan of the author's father, James Lee Burke, for a long time, and in a fun nod to her dad, Alafair Burke actually includes a brief conversation between her detective, Ellie Hatcher, and her father's most beloved detective, Dave Robicheaux.
