Publisher Description

Throughout David Copperfield, Dickens masterfully sustains the action through a series of dramatic contrasts. As the story unfolds, David's happiest moments are often followed by those of extreme misery, and the author weaves the more humorous elements of the story between the times of great tragedy and sorrow. These experiences of joy and pain contribute to young David's growth to maturity until, at the end of the novel, he is able to find both success as a writer and true happiness with the woman he loves.

"I loved this book, especially the second half. This was Charles Dickens' favorite of his novels and his most autobiographical. I loved the memorable characters: Aunt Betsey, Peggoty, Ham, Agnes, and Traddles. I told Isaac (age 18) that this book is better than Great Expectations (his all-time favorite novel) but he doesn't believe me. I love how this book has so much to say about marriage: Clara and Mr. Murdstone (obviously an example of a horrible marriage), Peggoty and Barkis, Traddles and Sophy (so sweet! poor but happy and hard-working newlyweds), David and Dora (oops -- he realized he picked someone without much substance, but he loved her and was true to her anyway), Emily and Ham's engagement (poor Emily learns too late the lesson taught in so many great classic novels: marry the honest, hard-working boy-next-door instead of the handsome arrogant man who sweeps you off your feet), Mr. and Mrs. Micawber (definite comic relief -- and such a loyal wife), and of course David and Agnes. What a powerful book! Favorite quotes: "I think of every little trifle between me and Dora, and feel the truth, that trifles make the sum of life." --chapter LIII "Ever pointing upward, Agnes ; ever leading me to something better ; ever directing me to higher things!...all my life long I shall look up to you, and be guided by you, as I have been through the darkness that is past..." --chapter LX "Miss Mills replied, on general principles, that the Cottage of content was better than the Palace of cold splendour, and that where love was, all was." --chapter XXXVII "Never," said my aunt, "be mean in anything; never be false; never be cruel. Avoid those three vices, Trot, and I can always be hopeful of you." --chapter XV "Some happy talent, and some fortunate opportunity, may form the two sides of the ladder on which some men mount, but the rounds of that ladder must be made of stuff to stand wear and tear; and there is no substitute for thorough-going, ardent, and sincere earnestness." --chapter LXII " . . . Ride on! Rough-shod if need be, smooth-shod if that will do, but ride on! Ride on over all obstacles, and win the race!" --chapter XXVIII "I never could have done what I have done, without the habits of punctuality, order, and diligence, without the determination to concentrate myself on one object at a time...My meaning simply is, that whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do well; that whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself to completely; that in great aims and in small, I have always been thoroughly in earnest." --Chapter LXII"

" Part of me hesitates to give this 5 stars, because some of it was sentimental stuff that makes me crazy, but much of it was indeed amazing. I can't remember when I last marked so many lines in a book. I don't think I've ever seen the equal of his descriptions of people and places, and his understanding of people feels deeply true. Plus I found out where the rock group Uriah Heep got its name! "

" Started reading an un-picuted abridged version thinking the original would feel too long. Now that it's been read, curiosity beckons for a future reading of the entire piece. Agreed with reviews of falling for the characters: Love Mr Macawber's peculiar 'pecuniary' interests and long-windedness; Copperfield's compassion and level headedness through rough times; Betsy trotwood's dynamic, no nonsense personality. Couldn't wait to finish the book but then 1/4 of the way from the end I wanted to stay put in 19c England. "

" I was forced to read this in a Brit Lit class. I think the reasoning was that it was thick and looked impressive but was not so deep it would scorch off the delicate ears of dear little community college students. It was a degrading experience that I can only compare to being forced to watch a boxed set of daytime soaps from the 80's. Ugh! "

" This book was one of the most delightful stories I have ever read. The plot was interesting with the usual twists and turns that come with the Victorian serial novel, the cast of characters were the varied Dickensian gallery of saints and devils, and the undertones of the sea and the inevitability of mortality soak inside the work like water in a sponge. While the book was lengthy, I enjoyed it for the most part. I honestly cannot think of any criticism for this novel (and for me that's saying something!!!!!) so go to the bookstore pick up a copy ASAP (B+N classics has a great copy with good notes and a snazzy cover!!!!) " Being my first Dickens book, i was initially a little naive to to the style, and i found it a little hard to get into for the first hundred pages or so. However, i am so pleased that a persevered with it, because i found myself creating attachments to the characters and truly 'getting into' it! I was surprised by some of the characters portrayal; i'd heard rumours that Dickens portrayed the female characters a boring and pathetic, such as was the social preconceptions at the time. However, Agnes, Little Emily and Rosa Dartle were all in my opinion some of the best characters in the book, with Agnes being a voice of wisdom and intelligence, with Rosa being feisty and independent and Emily having a slightly contraversial story line. I was however dissapointed in David's choice of wife; Dora was pathetic, and somewhat tedious to read about. I was a little dissapointed with the ending because i would have liked to see the horrible Uriah get more of what was coming to him. Despite that, and Dora, this book was excellent and therefore deserves a four out of five (a 4.5 if i could). "

" Ahh, I love Dickens. Fantastic story and loveable characters. The only part that left me completely irritated was when David was wooing Dora. She was painfully immature, whiny and ridiculous & it rankled me that he ate it up. Otherwise everything ended all tied up with a bow in standard Dickens style, which being the simple, happy-ending girl I am, made me content. I even loved his usual extreme coincidences he brings into almost every story. In a modern story I don't think an author could get away with it, but it works for me! "

" I've wanted for a while now to read this book simply because I know that reading a 800 page book would be a big accomplishment for me. It's not really that I want to get anything out of a classic story such as this, but that I will be more on the same page with people who read. In reading I'm learning and in learning my brain is chewing this stuff up and getting wiser. So far I think I'm doing ok with the book. It's a challenge to read as sometimes I'm reading and get ahead of myself and get lost in what Charles Dickens is trying to say. As I'm reading this book I will be reading other books simply because I know that this book is long and has a wide variety of transitions. I hope to finish this book before the due date for reading 25 books before the new year approaches. It's a challenge I'm willing and ready to take. "

" Despite the wide availability of PBS/Beeb versions of nearly every Dickens novel under the sun, I am proud to say I resisted the temptation to crib by watching first and reading later, and hit the book first with this one. And it was worth it...classic for a reason! And how glad am I that I waited until after college for it?! (During school, it seemed like I could only see the musty dustiness of Dickens...but as a voluntary adult reader, completely different, and much much better!) "

" Good tale about a boy's journey and what he goes through to finally mature and figure out the secrets of life. One can relate to David as his experiences are similar to those of which all have gone through. The use of language was at times a bit too flowery and rambling for my taste (but, hey, that's Dickens). "

" This, like all of Dickens work, is a great novel. Something is a little different in this one though. The plot feels less grounded and more random. You don't look for that "great payout" to figure some key missing piece of data at the end. I don't know, it just feels like a tale of an average gentleman's life. The "climax" doesn't feel as meaningful as it does in most of Dickens' other work. That's not to say this is a bad novel. It's not at all. It's interesting and filled with wonderful and horrible characters. If you like Dickens, give this a read, it's one of his classics. If you don't like Dickens this won't change your mind. "

" I feel like Dickens is a little uncool today because of his brazen sentimentality and crowd-pleasing tendencies. But the quality of the writing and plotting is always really high and, well, a little sentimentality and crowd-pleasing never killed anybody. Not as ambitious as Bleak House, so I won't give it the full 5, but almost everything here works except the unnecessarily rushed resolution. "

" The first time I read this book I fell utterly, completely, head-over-heels, in love with David Copperfield. And as a result was roundly teased by my sisters for many years! Although my ardor may have diminished over the years, it has never quite faded. The compelling thing for me about this book is the intense detail of characterization, and the way in which, more than any of his other novels, it has the feel of Dickens' own autobiography. I feel like this is the life Dickens imagined himself leading - a life of gentle joys and quiet observation, in which despite the tears and losses along the way, a happy home is found in the end. For tragedy and drama Oliver Twist or A Tale of Two Cities are where Dickens shines best, but for emotional connection, David Copperfield will always be my favorite. "

Dickens' refers to this book with the following quotation: 'Like so many fond parents I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child, and his name is David Copperfield.' It is a bildingsroman - a true "coming-of-age" story and somewhat parallels Dickens' own life. Highly recommend it. "

About Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was born in Landport, Portsmouth, England, the second of eight children in a family continually plagued by debt. A legacy brought release from the nightmare of debtors’ prison and child labor and afforded him a few years of formal schooling. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his early writings brought him the amazing success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. He was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and he remains popular, responsible for some of English literature’s most iconic characters.
