Understanding the urgent need for a deeply thoughtful, balanced book to explain our national political process, Dave Barry has not even come close. Though he himself has covered many campaigns, run for president several times, and run for cover at the rainy inauguration of George W. Bush (the man will spare nothing for his art), Barry has instead outdone himself.

Below the Beltway includes Barry's stirring account of how the United States was born, including his version of a properly written Declaration (When in the course of human events it behooves us, the people, not to ask "What can our country do for us, anyway?" but rather whether we have anything to fear except fear itself) and a revised Constitution (Section II: The House of Representatives shall be composed of people who own at least two dark suits and have not been indicted recently).

Dave also cracks the income-tax code and explains the growth(s) of government, congressional hearing difficulties, and the persistent rumors of the influence of capital in the Capitol. Among other civic contributions, his tour of Washington D.C. should end school class trips forever.

" Funny, but hard to concentrate on as an audio book. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Chandra | 2/16/2014

" Again, Dave Barry cracks my nerdy self up. This is outrageously funny, especially for the "inside the beltway" crowd. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Frank | 2/1/2014

" The book itself is great, but the reader on the audiobook takes all the fun out of Dave Barry. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Kathy | 1/21/2014

" Dave Barry is hilarious! This book is a great parody on US History and US politics! "

" I listened to this while driving to work, bad idea. There were times I was laughing so hard I almost ran off the road. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Laura | 1/4/2014

" I thought I might have a different view of politics with a different administration, but I am still just as cynical as Dave is. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Kathy | 1/2/2014

" Dave Barry is amazing. He can make me laugh; he can make me cry. This wasn't his best book, but it hit the funny bone quite regularly. He pokes fun at all sides of the aisle. Watch out for the giant zucchini. (PS, this one is clean, unlike some of his novels.) "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Virginia | 12/19/2013

" I like Dave Barry, but found myself not as into this read. The material is getting a bit dated by now, too. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Cathy Gulkin | 12/13/2013

" The first half was just a rehash of old Barry stuff. The second half was far funnier, very close to the truth of how things run, but I didn't appreciate his Cuba rant. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Matt | 12/2/2013

" I found Barry's columns about politics funny, but necessarily spectacular...until I hit the section of the book describing Miami politics. I was laughing so hard I was crying. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jen | 8/13/2013

" Overall, it was a good book, but the section on Florida politics was hysterical! I still can't beleive any of that actually happened. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Primadonna | 7/19/2013

" Although the material is somewhat dated (pre 9/11), I still found the book rather amusing. Barry's take on government is pretty giggle-worthy, though he does take a nearly disc-long sidetrip into everything that makes his homestate of Florida weird. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Lori | 5/17/2013

" Anything you read by him will always be funny. I don't want to spoil it for you by writing a silly review. Just read him! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Charlynn | 4/27/2013

" I LOVE Dave Barry. He makes me laugh out loud with every single page. Sometimes it's just a quiet laugh, sometimes I laugh so hard I cry and I can't breathe. He says what we're all thinking, and I am constantly amazed that one person can be so funny and make a point at the same time. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Cathi95 | 4/25/2013

" I've read Barry before and enjoy his commentary on the world. This one worked well. The only thing I regretted is that it was not more current. Guess I will have to check and see if he has written anything politically slanted since! "
