Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935) gained much of her fame with lectures on women’s issues, ethics, labor, human rights, and social reform. She often referred to these themes in her fiction. She is best remembered for her 1892 short story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” based on her own bout with severe postpartum depression and misguided medical treatment.
Clint Willis, a climber since he was ten years old, has written more than forty anthologies on adventure, politics, religion, and war, as well as hundreds of articles for such publications as the New York Times, Men’s Journal, and Outside. Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1848) transformed the American literary landscape with his innovations in the short story genre and his haunting lyrical poetry, and he is credited with inventing American gothic horror and detective fiction. In 1845 the publication of his most famous poem, “The Raven,” brought him national fame.
Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was born of English parents in Bombay, India. At seventeen, he began work as a journalist and over the next seven years established an international reputation with his stories and verses of Indian and army life, including such classics as The Jungle Book and Kim. In 1907 he became the first English writer to receive the Nobel Prize.
Blue Balliett is the author
of several acclaimed mystery novels, including The Wright 3, The Calder Game,
The Danger Box, and Chasing Vermeer, an
Edgar Award winner. She graduated from Brown with a degree in art history and
currently resides in Chicago.
W. W. Jacobs (1863–1943) is considered a master of the
macabre tale, mostly for his work The
Monkey’s Paw, a classic horror short
story. He was a master at weaving terror and suspense into scenes of everyday
life. Nevertheless, his popularity in his own lifetime arose mostly due to his
amusing maritime tales of life along the London docks.
Alfred McLelland Burrage (1889–1956) was a British writer, mainly known for his horror fiction. He served in the First World War and published a memoir of his experiences, War Is War, which became a bestseller. His humorous novel, Poor Dear Esme was described by Jack Adrian as a “comic classic”.
Robert Frost (1874–1963)
is America’s best-loved poet. His work epitomizes this country’s affinity for
plain speaking, nature, and the land. Over the course of his literary career he
won four Pulitzer Prizes, among many other honors.
Iain Banks (1954–2013) was a Scottish author
considered one of the most powerful, innovative, and exciting writers of his
generation. He wrote mainstream fiction under the name Iain Banks and science
fiction as Iain M. Banks. Following the publication and success of The Wasp Factory in 1984, he began to
write full time. His first science fiction book, Consider Phlebas, was released in 1987, marking the start of the
popular Culture series. His books have been adapted for theater, radio, and
television. In honor of his science fiction work, an asteroid was named for him
in 2013, and asteroid (5099) Iainbanks now resides in the main asteroid belt of
the Sol system.

About the Narrators
Neil Hellegers grew up in New Jersey and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a BA in theater arts and a minor in psychology before getting an MFA in acting from the Trinity Rep Conservatory in Providence, Rhode Island. He moved to New York City in 2003 and, since then, has made a career of theatrical performance, percussion, theater education, and audiobook narration. He currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife and son.
Grover Gardner (a.k.a. Tom Parker) is an award-winning narrator with over a thousand titles to his credit. Named one of the “Best Voices of the Century” and a Golden Voice by AudioFile magazine, he has won three prestigious Audie Awards, was chosen Narrator of the Year for 2005 by Publishers Weekly, and has earned more than thirty Earphones Awards.
Simon Prebble, a British-born performer, is a stage and television actor and veteran narrator of some three hundred audiobooks. As one of AudioFile’s Golden Voices, he has received thirty-seven Earphones Awards and won the prestigious Audie in 2010. He lives in New York.
Graeme Malcolm was an actor and winning audiobook narrator who earned twelve AudioFile Earphones Awards. He has performed on Broadway as Pharaoh in Aida and as Sir Edward Ramsay in The King and I. His television appearances include Law & Order, Follow the River, and Mr. Halpern and Mr. Johnson (with Laurence Olivier). His film credits include A Further Gesture, The Adventures of Sebastian Cole, and Reunion.
