Publisher Description

Taya soars over Ondinium on metal wings. She is an icarus—a courier privileged to travel freely across the city’s sectors and mingle indiscriminately among its castes. But even she can’t outfly the web of terrorism, loyalty, murder, and intrigue that snares her after a daring mid-air rescue. Taya finds herself entangled with the Forlore brothers, scions of an upperclass family: handsome, brilliant Alister, who sits on the governing council and writes programs for the Great Engine; and awkward, sharp-tongued Cristof, who has exiled himself from his caste and repairs clocks in Ondinium’s lowest sector. Both hide dangerous secrets, in this city that beats to the ticking of a clockwork heart . . .

"Quite a clever piece of steam-punk. Some of the convolutions were difficult to handle wit my stop/start style reading, but ultimately it all made sense. The romantic element wasn't too mushy (which I thought it might become when first introduced) although the identity doubts on some of the characters were a bit cliched. Hullo Shakespeare?? Good suspense and great creation of the "alien" environment- I could picture the aerial transport lines and the "engine" running the place quite well. Summary: Interesting read for 12+ and not a trivial tale."

" While I enjoyed the setting and the basic idea of the plot, a lot of the character interactions felt off to me. SPOILERS Alister gave me the creeps immediately, and I didn't understand how Taya (who is supposed to be good at reading people) couldn't sense something wrong. Her attraction to him felt weird and forced, which meant that I was expecting him to do something evil from their first meeting. "

" Interestingm, remind me somewhat of Martha Wells. Though I got some serious buts, the crucial dialogue was sometimes lame (believable, but lame, but we expect better lines from fiction than "I hate you, you make me sick!"). The plot also was a little bit disappointing. "

" Cute steampunk/fantasy/romance. The leads were well-developed but the side characters needed more fleshing out. "

" I loved the world the author has built with different cast systems. The mystery kept you guessing until the end overall it was a good book. I did not like the romance in the book or that the author made a big change to it in the middle of the book. to me the romance felt a little forced but the storyline was an interesting one with a wide cast of characters. " i loved it. i thought it had two endings however. and after the drama and intrigue of the first ending, i didnt have enought energy to take the second ending. but despite that, i loved the story. the steam punk world just completely consumed me. "

" Picked it up in the bookstore, the summary look interesting. Was pleaseantly surprised with the story and the way the tale unfolded. Led to me picking up Whitechapel Gods. Roughly the same idea of the mix of man and machine. "

" Very interesting society- strict castes- Exalteds (masked and robed in public) at top, Plebeians at bottom, military, craftsmen, etc. in between. Messages are carried by Icarii (metal winged messengers). One Icarus, Taya, gets embroiled in political intrigue, bombs, murders. "

" Enjoyable, but not a well written book by any stretch of the imagination. Great imagery, but dense characters and a plot that feels like it was tacked on randomly to add another 100 pages or so to the length after the interesting plot ended. "
