Protagonist Kris Kelvin arrives at a scientific research station hovering above the surface of Solaris, where research has been ongoing for years on the strange ocean life form. When Kris and his colleagues become more aggressive in trying to force contact with Solaris, the ocean's response is to experiment with the researchers' minds by confronting them with their most painful and repressed thoughts and memories through the materialization of complex human constructs. Kris is confronted with the manifestation of his deceased wife and his guilt over her suicide, but whatever seems to be tormenting the other researchers appears to be much worse.

"Reading Lem is such a twisted mind-fuck. Science fiction has never been so trippy, spooky, and ominous. Like all good scifi it deals with humanity's frustrating attempt to understand a sentient planet, and our search for meaning in things we don't understand. My kind of novel. " — Meggan (5 out of 5 stars)

" wicked unearthly atmosphere (where's there's no atmosphere..), sick yellow people fight each-other and the demons inside themselves. "
" Excellent book - and the George Clooney film is actually very close to the original book! "
" It seems like the eastern science fiction writers are the only writers with innovative ideas about alien life. In this novel alien life is discovered but it doesn't seem able or interested in communicating with us. "
" I wish there was a better translation. "
" L'incipit della storia è bellissimo e particolare, poi il libro si perde strada facendo per tirarsi su sul finale, ma il giudizio rimane non positivo... "
" Loved it!! It was the lyrical way that the author wrote throughout the book. The ending, that was so beautiful, and the questions it piques in your mind while you're reading it. "
