Publisher Description

Comedy is totally subjective. What makes one person roar with laughter can fail to elicit even the faintest of smiles from another. But the classics of comic verse have stood the test of time.

Here are the favorites from Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Jonathan Swift, Thomas Hood, Hillaire Belloc, W.S. Gilbert, William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, John Keats, C.S. Calverley- all the way through to the masterly pen of our age, John Betjeman. And that is not to forget perhaps the greatest of them all: Anon.

They wrote in couplets, triplets, in quatrains and trochaic dimeters. There are ballads, sonnets, proverbs, and nonsense verse. Poems to inform, divert, satirize, castigate and praise. And then there is the delightfully abused form, the limerick. A collection to make all listeners smile, laugh, remember and discover.

"I read this book finally, upto the last page, as a part of a very interesting course on 18th C literature, and I loved the insights into Swift's work the course gave me. Specially amusing was my professor's fascination with the 'scatological fixation' that Swift shows in this work. :D "

" An amazing novel, especially considering the fact that it was written in 1726. Beware of the Yahoo! ... especially since you'll discover that those savages are closer to yourself than you think. In fact, perhaps comparing Yahoos to humans is an insult to Yahoos? "

" I like A Modest Proposal better, but this is still a great piece of literature. One thing about it is that I would really read it one section at a time. It's a tough piece to read all the way through since it can start to slow down after awhile. "

" It was interesting but it was kind of difficult to get through. It wasn't a challenging read but it had the tendency to get wordy and boring. The first two parts of the book are considerably more entertaining than the last two. "
