Tom Hanks wrote the introduction to this rousing story of two inseparable friends and soldiers portrayed in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

William Wild Bill Guarnere and Edward Babe Heffron were among the first paratroopers of the U.S. Army - members of an elite unit of the 101st Airborne Division called Easy Company. Arguably the bravest, most efficient, physically fit, and tight-knit group of soldiers the Army has ever produced, the unit was called upon for every high-risk operation of the war, including D-Day, Operation Market Garden in Holland, the Battle of the Bulge, and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden.

Both fought side-by-side until Guarnere lost his leg in the Battle of the Bulge and was sent home. Heffron went on to liberate concentration camps and rake Hitler's Eagle's Nest hideout. United by their experience, the two reconnected at the war's end and have been the best of friends ever since. Their story is a tribute to the lasting bond forged between comrades in arms - and to all those who fought for freedom.

" Excellent, excellent history lesson. This candid eyewitness account does so much more than any boring textbook can. It's not a glorification of war, but a wonderful memorial to Easy Company which must have been a rather special bunch of guys. It was hard stuff at times, but well balanced with some very hilarious scene (Bill's attempted escape from the hospital comes to mind). A really great read I'll happily pick up again some time. "

" I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I also knew most of the story prior to reading it as we watch the mini-series at least once a year. "

" I thought this book was written in an interesting way, with each chapter bouncing back and forth between the two veterans as they took you from their childhood homes in Philly, through basic training and into airbourne school, and to the trenches of Europe during WWII. It showed how tightly knit the group was as a whole, and gives an uncensored look at the life of a soldier during the war. I very much enjoyed this book. "

" Excellent read, a personal, sad and funny read all at the same time. "
