Publisher Description

Joy Adamson is world-famous as the woman who walked with lions. These are the books that brought the story of her work to a public whose imagination was captured by the discovery of this remarkable interaction between man and beast.

Born Free, first published in 1960 (and immortalised in film by Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers), tells the story of her relationship with Elsa, raising her from a young cub and later releasing her into the wild. Here is Adamson's inspiring saga for a new generation of listeners to discover.

"Heart-warming autobiographical book about a European game warden and his wife, Joy Adamson, who adopt and raise a lioness cub in Kenya during the 1950s. The story is emotional, but the writing is matter-of-fact. The reader is provided with an intimate look into the activities of wildlife in that part of Africa, and the life of a game warden. By the end of the book, aided by the adorable descriptive writing and plenty of pictures, I was in love with Elsa. . . and in tears. The book is not world-changing, but it is somehow deeply affecting nonetheless. I want to on a Safari, now."

" A fascinating read, but I found that Born Wild better described how the Adamsons managed to get so close to the animals, their special relationships and explained their methods in a more detailed way. I was also very surprised at how brief the death of Elsa was treated in the book. It would almost appear that Joy Adamson was hardly affected by this from reading the relevant chapters in the book which I find unbelievable and will put down to just being badly put into words. "

" We sang the song from the movie when I was in grade school. I think I might even have the LP soundtrack for this one! Overall, an interesting read. Basically, the story of an Englishman and his wife, who live in Africa and come upon three lion cubs, after he has to shoot the mother in self-defense. The book goes on to describe the life of the one cub, how it became a part of their family, and how they eventually let her go free in the wild. "

" I remember I saw the movie years ago, but I had never read the full story of Elsa and her human family Joy and George Adamson until now. I liked reading about Elsa's curiosity and how even as she gradually left the Adamson's care, she never lost the bond she had with them. "

" I first read this book when I was in high school in the 1970's and fell in love with both the books (sequals are Living Free and Forever Free) and the movie. It is a touching story where sometimes humans have to interfere with nature and the consequences that it may bring. "
