Thanks to a heart transplant, former FBI agent Terrell McCaleb is enjoying a quiet retirement, renovating the fishing boat he lives on in Los Angeles Harbor. But McCaleb's calm seas turn choppy when a story in the "What Happened To?" column of the LA Times brings him face-to-face with the sister of the woman whose heart now beats in his chest. From her, McCaleb learns a terrible truth: that the donor of his heart was not killed in an accident, as he'd been told, but was murdered.

Wracked with guilt over the fact that he's alive because another human being was killed, McCaleb embarks on a private investigation of his donor's murder—a crime as horrific as anything he ever encountered as a serial killer investigator for the FBI.

" Pretty decent book even if it was lacking Harry Bosch. I can't say what I liked about it without verging on spoilers--mystery, romance, characters, friendships, bureaucrats, twists and turns, fishing, law and order meets ER--so I'll just give it four stars and move onto Void Moon. "

" What I liked was the tension between partners who had to work together but did not really trust each other. The portrayed drive of a man who had to give up his job for medical reasons but was compelled to give it another go one more time. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Matthuvius Manhandlinglambs | 2/1/2014

" Great premise, suspenseful story, but bland characters. "

" I like all his books so far. Easy reading and keeps you interested. None of this nonsense of switching between 15 characters and substories until you forget the plot. Recommended "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 William | 1/24/2014

" It is too bad the Clint Eastwood movie based on this novel didn't have the same amount of intensity, emotion or excitement as the book. This was the first Michael Connelly book I ever read, and it made me hunger for more from this brilliant author. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Joseph | 1/20/2014

" I picked this up off the 25 cent shelf at my Library in Coeur d'Alene not even realizing that Clint Eastwood's image was on the cover. It was a great, relaxing read. I did wonder why no one used a cell phone and then checked the date of publication and its 11 years old. The movie comes tomorrow from Netflix so we'll see... "

" This is a book I read years ago, but pick up for a reread - haven't been to the library. A good thriller and made into a great film starring Eastwood. Not as interesting protagonist as Harry Bosch, but I would still recommend it. "

" Connelly excels in creating three-dimensional characters you care about. There is one really good chase scene with the serial killer, and the romance angle is pretty well done. A good suspense novel. "

" This was not Mr. Connelly's best work. I love the Harry Bosh novels, and I really liked the Lincoln Lawyer but, this character, McCaleb and the first in his series was not good. The plot was just fine but I couldn't connect with the guy. He seemed old to me. "
