Publisher Description

In this mystery in Nevada Barr’s New York Times bestselling series, District Park Ranger Anna Pigeon is betrayed by nature itself, as a most unnatural evil stalks its prey in the pristine West…

Straddling the border between Montana and Canada lies the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park—Anna’s home away from home when she is sent on a cross-training assignment to study grizzly bears. Along with bear researcher Joan Rand and a volatile, unpredictable teenage boy, Anna hikes the back country, seeking signs of bear. But the tables are turned on their second night out, when one of the beasts comes looking for them. Daybreak finds the boy missing, a camper mutilated, and Anna caught in a grip of fear, painfully aware that her lifelong bond with nature has inexplicably snapped...

"Nailed it. I have even smelled the "blood lure" and yes, it was nassstyy! Thought her ramblings about Glacier National Park were accurate. It is an utterly beautiful place but just as dangerous. "

" I read this just before I visited Glacier National Park. Her writing style causes a cringe every now and then, but she tells a great story and really makes the national parks come to life. "

" I needed to give my brain a break for reality so I read this. I enjoyed the mystery and the natural park aspect but Anna totally over analyzes every emotion and that got a little much for what I needed in a quick fun read. I'll still read more of her books but will keep that in mind. "

" Really fun read. Read in anticipation of our trip to Glacier National Park. Since this book is about bear attacks, maybe not a good idea..... "

" Although this is not my genre, I enjoyed the book's setting (Glacier National Park) and the information on Grizzlies. Since I'm not fond of series, I probably won't read the others. "

" Interesting but not as good as the other Nevada Barr book I've read: Borderline. I've always wanted to visit the Montana National Parks, so that part of this book was of interest. "

About Nevada Barr

Nevada Barr was born in the small western town of Yerington, Nevada, and raised on a mountain airport in the Sierras. Pushed out of the nest, she fell into theatre, receiving her BA in speech and drama and her MFA in acting before making the pilgrimage to New York City, then Minneapolis. For eighteen years she worked on stage, in commercials and industrial training films, and doing voiceovers for radio. During this time she became interested in the environmental movement and began working in National Parks across the country during the summers. Woven throughout these seemingly disparate careers was the written word. Nevada wrote and presented campfire stories, taught storytelling, and was a travel writer and restaurant critic. She has won both the Agatha and Anthony awards for best first mystery.
