Publisher Description

The sudden death of her husband turns Merle Bennett's life upside down. She finds herself doing what she least expected, decamping to France for the summer to fix up the ancestral home. The village in southwest France should be idyllic: warm sunshine, vineyards, and walls of golden stone. As the past unravels, colliding with modern tensions and the filthy trials of renovation, the summer takes on a dark cast, full of secrets best left buried. In her first stand-alone suspense novel, Lise McClendon reaches deep into the past to find a France untouched by the outside world of tourism and fashion. Writing in a lyrical, often humorous style, she brings both the pain and rewards of rebirth and the rich French countryside to life.

"I enjoyed the book. I don't know why it took me so long to get through it. I kept stopping and starting, reading other books in the meantime. I did empathize with the main character, Merle. I guess I too hear that voice, "What, what?" I guess the mystery wasn't as compelling as the main character's dilemma of being on the cusp of a new life completely different from what she knew before."

" As you begin reading this book it may seem predictable. But don't stop reading or you'll miss the twists and turns that make life unpredictable and remind you that people aren't always as they seem. Blackbird Fly doesn't flow as easily as other books I've enjoyed yet Merle's journey is intriguing and believable. "

" I loved it. I woke up very early unable to sleep and read the whole thing while the sun rose and the birds started to sing. Made me wish I inherited a little house in France. I would have liked a slightly different ending, but the one it has works here. "

" A haunting story of intrigue, murder, violence . . . and love set in a beautifully portrayed rural French village. Beneath the elements of mystery, this is the story of one woman's growth, of a blackbird learning to fly. I heartily recommend it. "
