The old witch wants a pumpkin pie. First she plants a pumpkin seed. She weeds and waters and waits. A tiny sprout pokes through the ground, and soon a small pumpkin appears. It grows, and it grows some more. When Halloween is only hours away, the witch decides it is finally time to bake the pie. But first she must somehow pull the huge pumpkin off the vine.
With her fun-filled tale, popular children's author Erica Silverman teaches a gentle lesson in friendship and cooperation. Narrator John McDonough's lively portrayal of the old witch and each of her spooky companions will have youngsters laughing out loud.

"Went to Barnes and Noble recently and bought this for my classroom. I think I had it a long time ago but lost it along the way. It's such a cute story and has great illustrations! I think I'm going to use it for a sequencing activity. Definitely one of my favorite children's books," — Jennifer (4 out of 5 stars)

" This was a favorite of ours when my boys were small. We would read it daily in the fall and act out the voices. I have such fond memories thanks to this book, it will remain on my shelf and in my heart forever. "
" A witch can't pull the big pumpkin out of the ground but with help from some other creatures, she gets the pumpkin and makes pumpkin pie for all. Cute repeating refrains throughout the book make this great for preschool age kids. "
" Think "Giant Turnip"/"Enormous Potato" with a pumpkin and a cast of Halloween characters. This one did nothing for me--story and illustrations were not my cup of tea--but it would probably have a few young fans in a story time. "
" I would have to say this is my favorite children's book IF you have the soundtrack that goes with it. "
" Love this for halloween especially with the cd!!! "
" wonderful Halloween story based upon the folktale, "The Great, Big, Huge, Enormous Turnip" "
" I really like the rhythm of this book, and the way certain phrases are repeated. While I wish the text was formatted better to make this clearer, the story is simple and would make a great read-aloud or flannel story. "
" This book could be used to teach students about plants and the process in which they grow. This book is about how a pumpkin grows. Great to teach around Halloween time. "
" Gotta get the music with it. It makes the whole thing way better. "
" Years ago I got this book along with a tape that would read it aloud to the kids. The tape was fabulous although we have since lost it. We still love to read this book. "
" Good Halloween read-aloud. "
" I can't believe that I hadn't read this before. It's a fun retelling of The Enormous Turnip... except with Halloween characters. Will definitely be using this for a Halloween storytime in the future... "
