When a plane crashes into the Antarctic ice, exposing a massive cave beneath, a rescue and research team is dispatched. Twenty-four hours later, all contact is lost. Captain Alex Hunter and his highly trained squad of commandos are fast tracked to the hot zone to find out what went wrong - and to follow up the detection of a vast underground reservoir. Accompanying the team is an assortment of researchers, including petrobiologist Aimee Weir. If the unidentified substance proves to be an energy source, every country in the world will want to know about it - some would even kill for it. Once inserted into the cave system, they don't find any survivors - not even a trace of their bodies. Primeval hieroglyphs hint at an ancient civilisation, and an ancient danger. Spectres of the dead haunt the tunnels. Within hours, one of the party will die. To bring his team out alive, Alex will need every one of his mysterious abilities beneath the dark ice.

" Interesting but certainly not in the same league as Andy McDermott or Matthew Reilly. An exciting story but it failed to really hold me. It was good enough that I put next entry on my to read list. "

" I haven't disliked a book as much as this one in a long time. Huge chunks of exposition that are just a slog to read. Worthless characters that do silly things that you don't care about. I was told that this was a science fiction book, but the extent of the science is using techie words. One character has pseudo magical powers due to a bullet lodged in his brain. Seriously. "

" Really liked the action, the story, and the characters. Not as good as James Rollins but really close. Amazing for a first in the series. "

" This is the perfect summer read if you like pseudo-science thrillers in the Crichton/Rollins/Preston & Child vein. This first novel introduces us to government operative Alex Hunter who has "enhanced abilities" I won't spoil for you. It's kind of a stretch, but I like it anyway. A group of scientists and soldiers drop deep under the Antarctic ice to discover what happened to a previous search team exploring a huge cavern. There are some great villainous characters, and even a few romances I didn't hate because thankfully they take a back seat to the action and suspense. Loved the "ancient terror dating back to the dawn of time," and all the other ancient terrors unleashed from the underground sea. It gets really Lovecraftian at the end with some great visual descriptions. Very fast-moving and fun. "
