"so, whenever i read a mystery novel, i really want there to be a secret gay love affair or several secret gay love affairs or maybe a trans-person at the center of the mystery and honestly - when it comes to providing this sort of thing, anne perry delivers. i realize it would take some of the fun out of the mysteries in general if they were all gay interest, but at least some of them are. this one is good - because of course i wanted anstiss and byam to be gay, and towards the end it was pretty obvious that was the case -but there is still a nice surprise because perry delivers a crazy murder suicide! yay! best victorian murder mysteries around."

" I have read a lot of the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mysteries by Anne Perry starting with the Cater Stree Hangman. They are set in Victorian England and tell about Charlotte and Thomas as time passes. Each story is separate but their lives are in time order. "

" Oh, this was a great one! I started it not expecting much because the last couple of books by Perry were rather on the awful side. This one had a new social injustice of the Victorian age (usurers), enough side story of both Thomas Pitt and Micah Drummand to make it personal, a plausible murder plot line and even though you saw part of the ending coming it still had a jaw dropping twist. I wanted to read it again right after I finished it to catch the nuances I knew I had missed. "
