Tamora Pierce begins a new Tortall trilogy by introducing Beka Cooper, an amazing young woman who lived 200 years before Pierce's popular Alanna character. For the first time, Pierce employs first-person narration in a novel, bringing readers even closer to a character they will love for her unusual talents and tough personality.

Beka Cooper is a rookie with the law-enforcing Provost's Guard, and she's been assigned to the Lower City. It's a tough beat that's about to get tougher, as Beka's limited ability to communicate with the dead clues her in to an underworld conspiracy. Someone close to Beka is using dark magic to profit from the Lower City's criminal enterprises, and the result is a crime wave the likes of which the Provost's Guard has never seen before. " It was hard to follow at first...then I learned that there's a glossary - Duh! Now I don't want to put it down. I love this book! One of my favorite authors - she's done it again! "

" I loved this book! Ican't wait 4 the next one to come out. But I'll probably have to reread this one 1st. It's been awhile since i've read it but i don't mind because it was sooo good!!! "

" Overall, I liked it. I thought it started rather slow and that the journaling was a little too detailed to be realistic as a journal. Other than that, fun story, good characters and I've already started the second one, so I must've liked it. "

" It's really hard to get through, but I do enjoy the main characters tuff-gurl attitude, I just wish it had an observable plot. "

" Like Tamora Pierce's plots and writing style. Don't know why she so self-consciously makes a gay character in every series. Doesn't blend it in well with other characters or plot. Still a good read. "

" So far, pretty interesting. The story is moving fairly quickly and the world is different than other books. However, the use of the Dogs, Puppies, Kennels and similar canine terms to describe the functions of the police (?) force can get a little maddening. You kind of have to numb yourself to it. "

" Pretty good, a little simply written. Things were stated, not stated well hidden so that you must read between the lines to figure thigns out. I liked the plot lines though and still want to read the sequel. There was also a bit of puzzle pieces and all that like a lot of her books. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Janalynn | 8/14/2013

" It was fun to read but I credit some of that to the previous books set in this world. It had a few slow moments but if you want to see determination, Beka definatly has that. "
