It all begins when Carey, Charles, and Paul were sent away to stay with their old aunt in a Bedfordshire village. It looks like an uneventful summer is ahead, until the day they find Miss Price sitting in the garden, her grey coat and skirt torn and crumpled, her hair hanging down in wisps.

Miss Price, it turns out, is studying to be a witch and takes the children on a series of thrilling adventures via a flying bed. They visit a London police station and a tropical island, and go back in time to the 17th century.

This book inspired the Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

" completely different from the movie, the only thing that is the same is the bedknob and the main characters' names "

" I enjoyed the movie as a child and wanted to see how the book compared. The characters were the same, however Disney took some liberties as they are prone to do. The book overall was well done and a great light read. The book is good for children that like history since it does include some time travel. "

" An old book by the author of "The Borrowers" and upon which the Disney film of the same name was very roughly based. The book is a fun little adventure yarn in which three children come into possession of a magic bed-knob which, when turned on a bed-post, allows them to travel to another place. The children travel to various exotic places, but there is little overall story arc. Interestingly, the children blackmail the witch they get the bed-knob from (which is unusually deviant behavior presented in a straightforward and unremarkable way). Also, the book is a compilation of two books, the first one written about 15 years before the second. It is obvious that the author has learned much in the intervening 15 years because the first book is simply a listing of potentially fun events, while the second book has much deeper characterizations and even something of an interesting moral choice at the end when the witch travels back in time to be with her new companion. "

" Appealing premise and a fine start, but climax of the story on an island full of "cannibals" has not aged well. Not recommended. "

" I didn't know this WAS a book until a few months ago, so I gave this a shot hoping for something along the lines of the Mary Poppins book, which was wonderful. Unfortunately, this one was tedious and bland. I'd recommend Mary Nortons "The Borrowers" series rather than this one. "
