Sevastopol, 1942. As the might of the German army threatens to engulf the Soviet Union, a brave, young Red Army sniper named Tat'yana Levchenko becomes a national hero. But who is this beautiful assassin? To the Soviets, she is a refined poet and weapon of destruction with three hundred enemy kills to her name—a dedicated soldier whose skill and courage have rallied a motherland on the brink of despair. To the Americans, she is a Red Communist with movie-star good looks who is championed by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt—a reminder of Soviet suffering and a symbol of the vital need to defeat the Nazis. Invited to the United States at the behest of the White House, Tat'yana sets off on a whirlwind tour with the first lady. Amid the curious crowds, rumors begin to swirl that Tat'yana is a spy, a pawn of politicians and propagandists battling for power and control. But before suspicions can be confirmed, the Soviet soldier vanishes. It will be more than fifty years before a resourceful correspondent uncovers the truth and the full story of the beautiful assassin is finally told.

"One of those interesting "what if" historical novels. Solid writing from Michael White, just like in Soul Catcher. Enjoyed the first 3/4ths of the book much more than the last 1/4th. Ending seemed rushed and slapped together with none of the care, detail and engagement of the first few chapters." — Kaigham (4 out of 5 stars)

Michael White is a wonderful storyteller, and his work is long on atmosphere, and packed with action.
" yeah, yeah, she's a beautiful mommy WWII sniper. The opening parry between her and a Nazi sniper over several days was great. Then, blech. Didn't finish it. "
" Enjoyable book. A nice mix of war, spies, Russia, US, and love. "
" Good book, well written with many interesting characters. The ending was a bit hurried and not as well executed as I had hoped, but nonetheless an interesting book on the relationship of the U.S. and the Soviets. "
" Not to me. 0 of 10 stars "
" Interesting novel set from the Russian perspective prior to the US involvement in WWII. Involves interesting relationships with Eleanor Roosevelt and others. "
" A book well worth reading with strong characters & a great story. I would definitely recommend this book. "
" A little slow to start. Once she got to America, it picked up. Makes you reflect on how we act here, and gives insight to what others think of us. "
" an addictive read. Made me regret having dropped history in sec 2. "
" By far one of the best books I've ever read. I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed seeing WW2 from a Soviet female sniper's perspective. I can't believe I found this book in the dollar store, of all places! "
" This historical fiction starts out very strong and would have been a 4 star for me but about 3/4 through it started to become very repetitive. It seemed as though the author was trying to be every genre and trying to appeal to every type of reader. "
" Kudos to Tat'yana.. Very brave and revolutionary character of the world war era.. "
" A really interesting story that held my interest day and night, and extremely well-written. One of my all-time favourites, I reckon. "
" Well written first person perspective - novel based on a historical figure from the Second WW, a female sniper who in real life had 309 kills.Conveys some of the tragedy and intrigue surrounding the Russian front and the early years before the USA entered the war. "
