Hap Collins has just returned home from a gig working on an off-shore oil rig. With a new perspective on life, Hap wants to change the way he's living, and shoot the straight and narrow. That is, until the man who stole Leonard Pine's boyfriend turns up headless in a ditch and Leonard gets fingered for the murder.

Hap vows to clear Leonard's name, but things only get more complicated when Leonard's ex shows up dead, too. o the police, it is just a matter of gay-biker infighting, but to Hap and Leonard, murder is always serious business, and these hit a little too close to home. " some pretty cool twist and turns. as always lansdale grabs the reader by the ears and headbutts them. gotta love it! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Kevin Beck | 2/5/2014

" Another violent, offensive, and extremely funny story from Joe Lansdale. The dialog between Hap and Leonard is reminiscent of Spenser/Hawk from Robert Parker's books. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 ☮Karen | 2/2/2014

" This would probably lend itself better to the male reader, due to some very macho parts; but as an open-minded female, I enjoyed it also. I'll definitely look for more books from this series. You learn that there are worse things in life than the bad chili.... "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Ken | 1/20/2014

" I'd give this four stars without hesitation if my taste ran more to pathos, violence, and heavy suspense. Otherwise, good characters & plot, intelligently handled, lots of humor, and plenty of gritty local and human color. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Lothar | 1/11/2014

" Everybody with a sense of humor should have read at least the first 3 chapters in his life. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Mark | 1/4/2014

" The 4th in the "Hap and Leonard" series, and as always a lot of fun, a great deal of chaos, and some wonderful insights into the human psyche, including various of its twisted forms. I am reading this series slowly, savoring it, and often wondering if it deserves its own genre., "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Brad | 12/5/2013

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Karla Leskovsky | 12/1/2013

" Another great Hap and Leonard adventure. Lansdale created incredibly likeable characters with these mismatched, accidental crime solvers. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Jeannette O'neal | 11/22/2013

" This book was way too graphic and violent for my tastes. I doubt I will be reading another one by this author. Story line and plot not bad but I don't need the torture details or descriptive abuse. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Craig Childs | 11/6/2013

" Read this out of order because I listened to it on audio, and it's the only one I could find in audio in the series. Good reader. Has all the voices down pat. Story was great, very funny, very profane (I like profane). I'll read more of this series. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Tim | 10/22/2012

" Darker even than the others, with some really brutal shit in it that was less enjoyable, but also coupled with some of the funniest parts of the series so far.... "

" I like Lansdale's books, but I couldn't get through this one. topping off the gang rape and graphic violence with middle-aged sex was enough for me to give up on finishing it. "

" I don't think I've ever laughed harder at a book than when I read the start of this one where a little squirrel comes bopping out of the East Texas Piney Woods and terrorizes the main character. Still, this was a violent story - more so than I really was comfortable with. "
