Publisher Description

"There is extraordinary quality of spirit that leads one to aspire to conquering rather than surviving. I hope you discover that spirit in yourself.”— Dr. Laura

The #1 national bestselling author and popular syndicated radio host shows men and women that they can have a good life no matter how much they struggled in their childhood. The intent of Bad Childhood—Good Life is to help you accept the truth of the assault on your psyche, understand your unique coping style and how it impacts your daily thoughts and actions, and guide you into a life of more peace and happiness.

For each one of us, there is a connection between our early family experiences and our current behavior. Many of the people “Dr. Laura” has helped did not realize how their histories impacted their adult lives, or how their choices—even their emotional reactions—were connected to their early years, playing a major role in their current unhappiness. In this hopeful, practical guide, written in her signature straightforward style and filled with real-life examples, Dr. Laura helps readers realize that no matter what circumstances they come from or currently live in, they are each ultimately responsible for their own actions and reactions as adults. Throughout, she shows the gains to be had by not being satisfied with an identity as a victim, or even as a survivor. Instead she helps readers from all walks of life strive to be the best they can each be—a victor!

"I listened to this on audio cd on my way to work. I was put off by Dr. Laura's tone at first, but she really grew on me, and I learned to appreciate her and the good that she is trying to do. This book was really good with very good points and ideas to know how to move forward despite a trying past. Her main point seems to be to act like you are worth having a good life and make decisions accordingly. I love her no nonsense approach to life. If you want to be happy, then why do you make dumb choices?"

" dr. laura is definitely not a writer... her run-on sentences and improper punctuation kept slowing me down. but aside from that, i enjoyed her message and found the content really helpful to me personally. "

" The best explanantions I've ever read about just moving on despite the crap you had no control over. Life is not about beginnings...but about the endings. There's always the lesson of change and hope despite the messes. And nobody has the perfect beginning...surprise, surprise. "

" DOn't waste your money or your time in a therapist chair, until you read this first. Then if you still need too, that's fine. But this is a great head start if not, "the full enchilada" on how to enjoy YOUR LIFE! "

" While I had a wonderful childhood and have a loving family, I believe the principals in this book apply to life's difficult events as they occur at any age or stage. Also, if you have a person in your life that you love or care about that had a Bad Childhood I think reading this book may help you relate to them and help them have a Good Life. "

" As usual, I agree with most of what Dr. Laura says, though I don't always agree on the delivery. This book was pretty light on the info, I felt, though the recommendations are sound. Basically, if you had a bad childhood, "GET OVER IT." This may be helpful to some who haven't moved on and continue dwelling on the past, but I'm not sure it took a whole book to say that. "

" I only read this book because the title caught my eye. It was just ok. A lot of her adivce is anectdotal and she uses a lot of quotes from her radio show callers. Some of her ideas were helpful, but without the gospel perspective, it was a little lacking in important areas. "

" This book was so encouraging and gave great insight in not only dealing with parents, but other relationships that are holding you back from living the Good Life. There is a healthy way to move on and no long fell guilt! I also loved the brief postscript at the end about Dr. Laura's own parents. "

" Change takes a lot more time and effort than Dr Laura claims. One cannot simply decide one day to let go of childhood traumas and say "I'm suddenly happy because I choose to be." It isn't that black and white. There are some good pieces in the book, however, so I gave it two stars. "
