Publisher Description

Meet Chick Best—a middle-aged, self-absorbed California dot.com millionaire. Other than his house and high-priced foreign cars, Chick’s most expensive possession is his trophy wife, Evelyn. Evelyn is good at spending Chick’s money, money that has pretty much run out. Another problem is his drug-addled sixteen-year-old daughter, Melissa. Though concerned about his family, Chick has resigned himself to a miserable state of acceptance. That is, until he, Evelyn, and Melissa take a Christmas vacation in Maui. With this, Chick’s life changes.…

Chick experiences unrequited love at first sight when he observes Paige Ellis emerging from the hotel swimming pool. His obsession, exceeded only by his need to possess her, isn’t diminished when he learns that she is happily married. Instead, Chick’s obsession compels him to drive to Paige’s house, where he runs down and kills her husband. Chick’s life begins to spiral homicidally out of control, resulting in the destruction of everything he holds dear. Will Paige learn the truth about Chick before it’s too late?

Fast paced, filled with wry humor, murder, lust, and dead-on L.A. characterizations, Cannell has written his most explosive novel yet.

"Once again FINALLY a fiction story that held my interest. Better to not know anything about the story, but it hooked me and took me into a whirlpool of obsession and went where I thought it wouldn't go. But some readers deffinetly don't like where it goes. All of Cannell's friends tried to talk him out of writting it. But he had to, he said."

" This may very well be my favourite Cannell book to date. Sad that the author died not long ago because he was a fantastic writer. This story, although often predictable, was still suspenseful and entertaining; a real page-turner. The characters were excellent. My audio version was narrated by Scott Brick, who is always a phenomenal narrator! "

" A good lesson for anyone thinking of straying, this novel took on an interesting (and not necessarily in a good way) yet maddening treatment. I found the view point shifts jarring until the author finally broke down the latter chapters to reflect the view points of the two adversarial characters. The unlikeable protagonist is still intriguing enough to stick with the story, but the ending was predictable compared to the author's lead-in, which promised (and didn't quite measure up to) a unique/different treatment from his previous books. Still, Cannell can tell a story, and that's why I'll stick with him even though this isn't his best. "
