" LOVED this! Am about to re-read the whole back catalogue as a grown up. "

" I have been an ardent James Herbert fan ever since I read his first novel, The Rats, back in 1975. However, as much as I hate having to say it, I am afraid that I found ASH to be immensely disappointing. Nowhere near as good as his The Rats, The Fog or The Dark. At times I felt I wasn't reading a horror book at all, but just one about some secret society, coupled with far too many unconvincing characters and a rather weak plot. Also, not enough mention of exactly what was causing the hauntings. As I say, very disappointing. "

" An enjoyable read with a clever topical plot. Easy going, the type of book which doesn't require flipping back to previous pages to remember the characters. The only criticism is that it was too drawn out towards the end and could have got away with fewer pages. "

" I am a James Herbert fan of old (since the early 80s) but I was really disappointed with this one! I don't remember him being quite as 'wordy' in the past, although the descriptive writing was fabulous! However, I found the sub plot and the the romance far too cheesy! Glad I only paid 20p for this! "

" Very disappointed! Not what expected from James Herbert. Glad I only paid 20p on Amazon. "

Iain Hamilton | 1/27/2014
" Has to be a contender for the worst books ever written. Come on Mr. Herbert you can do so much better. Preposterous and cliched. Had to force myself to keep reading and get to the end. Only 20 pence and I still feel robbed. "

" I can't believe I'm going to say this but boy Ash was a really hard slog. It was predictable and to be honest not up to Mr Herbert's usual standard. "
-

Rob | 1/16/2014
" Utterly, utterly ridiculous and, although Herbert writes well and spins a good yarn, the preposterous nature of the plot lets this down immensely. "
-

Oodlum | 12/20/2013
" excellent. Herbert has not let me down. well worth the wait "

Clive Foulds | 11/13/2013
" Oh dear, not what I expect from James Herbert. Having read all Mr Herbert's books I was greatly looking forward to his latest book after so long since the last one. I was greatly disappointed with wooden characters, terrible dialog and a plot so full of holes it was ridiculous. Very poor. "

Nicola Fordham | 11/12/2013
" Imagine you wrote a list of every stereo typical thing that is scary then put it into a story, spiders, bats , rats, ghosts. It's kind of tacky and entertaining at the same time. "
-

" Was a great fan of JH many years ago, read all of his books - just found this one too long with too many references to infamous individuals - shorten it by 300 pages, keep the theme and the tension but loose the distractions - I just bypassed them in the latter third of the book "
-

Pauline | 9/1/2013
" Given this 3 stars but should really be 2.5.Could have been a good storyline but all seemed wishy washy somehow. Not enough of a ghost story really. "
-

Barry Dodd | 7/29/2013
" I so wanted to love this book, but I didn't, it fell short in lots of ways. The last quarter of the book felt rushed. 4/10 "
-

Suz | 3/8/2013
" Densely packed with plots and subplots, an interesting read. "
-

Tarrant Figlio | 2/19/2013
" Excellent horror that probably touches on every phobia and conspiracy theory. "
-

Becky Buchanan | 2/17/2013
" Creative but a little too gory for me. "
-

Elizabeth Ferry | 1/1/2013
" Pretty creepy ghost story though some of the parts were a little tedious; could have been probably about 100 pages shorter. "
-

Melanie Tolar | 12/20/2012
" This is one of the best books I've ever read. Scary, suspenseful and action-packed. Love it! "
-

Roddy Graham | 10/18/2012
" If I could give this minus stars I would - crap! "
-

Jo Ann | 9/12/2012
" Very enjoyable for it's genre. It caused me to research Unity Mitford, so I did learn something new, which is always good. "
