Publisher Description

David Ash, detective of the paranormal, is sent to the mysterious Comraich Castle, secluded deep in the Scottish countryside, to investigate a strange, high-profile case. A man has been found crucified in a locked room. The reports suggest that the cliff-top castle is being haunted.... Who or what is the reclusive hooded figure that Ash has seen from the window walking across the courtyard in the dead of night? What are the strange, animal-like sounds that come from the surrounding woods? And why are the castle's inhabitants so reluctant to talk about what they have seen? What Ash eventually discovers is truly shocking....

Featuring one of Herbert's best-loved characters, first encountered in The Ghosts of Sleath and Haunted, Ash is a ghost story like no other that will chill you to the marrow.

"An enjoyable read with a clever topical plot. Easy going, the type of book which doesn't require flipping back to previous pages to remember the characters. The only criticism is that it was too drawn out towards the end and could have got away with fewer pages."

" I have been an ardent James Herbert fan ever since I read his first novel, The Rats, back in 1975. However, as much as I hate having to say it, I am afraid that I found ASH to be immensely disappointing. Nowhere near as good as his The Rats, The Fog or The Dark. At times I felt I wasn't reading a horror book at all, but just one about some secret society, coupled with far too many unconvincing characters and a rather weak plot. Also, not enough mention of exactly what was causing the hauntings. As I say, very disappointing. "

" I am a James Herbert fan of old (since the early 80s) but I was really disappointed with this one! I don't remember him being quite as 'wordy' in the past, although the descriptive writing was fabulous! However, I found the sub plot and the the romance far too cheesy! Glad I only paid 20p for this! "

" Has to be a contender for the worst books ever written. Come on Mr. Herbert you can do so much better. Preposterous and cliched. Had to force myself to keep reading and get to the end. Only 20 pence and I still feel robbed. "

" I can't believe I'm going to say this but boy Ash was a really hard slog. It was predictable and to be honest not up to Mr Herbert's usual standard. "

" Utterly, utterly ridiculous and, although Herbert writes well and spins a good yarn, the preposterous nature of the plot lets this down immensely. "

" Oh dear, not what I expect from James Herbert. Having read all Mr Herbert's books I was greatly looking forward to his latest book after so long since the last one. I was greatly disappointed with wooden characters, terrible dialog and a plot so full of holes it was ridiculous. Very poor. "

" Imagine you wrote a list of every stereo typical thing that is scary then put it into a story, spiders, bats , rats, ghosts. It's kind of tacky and entertaining at the same time. "

" Was a great fan of JH many years ago, read all of his books - just found this one too long with too many references to infamous individuals - shorten it by 300 pages, keep the theme and the tension but loose the distractions - I just bypassed them in the latter third of the book "
