Publisher Description

Astrid Llewelyn is now a fully trained unicorn hunter, but she can't solve all her problems with just a bow and arrow. Her boyfriend, Giovanni, has decided to leave Rome, the Cloisters is in dire financial straits, her best friend's powers seem to be mysteriously disintegrating, and Astrid can't help but feel that school, home, and her hopes of becoming a scientist are nothing but impossible dreams.

So when she's given the opportunity to leave the Cloisters and put her skills to use as part of a scientific quest to discover the Remedy, Astrid leaps at the chance. Finally, she can have exactly what she wants - or can she?

At Gordian headquarters, deep in the French countryside, Astrid begins to question everything she thought she believed: her love for Giovanni, her loyalty to the Cloisters, and - most of all - her duty as a hunter. Should Astrid be saving the world from killer unicorns, or saving the unicorns from the world?

"I like Astrid just as much in this second novel as I did in the first. Astrid is a Unicorn Hunter, who doesn't like killing Unicorns (even if they are savage human killing beasts). She finds herself in the throes of an ethical struggle as she wants to protect the unicorns instead of destroying them."

" Oh how I HOPE the author writes a third book! I loved this story every single step of the way and I'm dying to find out what happens with Astrid, Philippa, the unicorns, everyone!!! "

" There's so much good about this book, but I feel like it was ultimately disappointing. I really liked the 1st book, and I liked this one too, but it was just so depressing. I realize it can't be all sunshiney rainbows when dealing with such huge issues, but I still wish there could have been more happiness for Astrid despite all the things she has to struggle with. I also feel like so much of this book is rushed, with characters being thrown out and never heard from again, and other situations staying completely unresolved. I also hate what happens to Astrid and the last part of the book. Maybe I just wasn't in the right place emotionally to read about it, but it really brought me down and it took away the heroine I adored from the first book. I was also confused about the Remedy and certain aspects of the book. So, still a lot of good in this one, and I really enjoyed how it made me think and brought up so many larger debate issues, but I feel like the character growth went backwards and the plot was all over the place at times. " Astrid Llewellyn's story continues as she struggles to fulfill her duties as a hunter and not give up on her desire to become a doctor. A great continuation of the series where we find out the source of The Remedy and then are left wanting more, more, more! "

" I didn't find it as easy to get into as the first one until I was about 3/4 of the way through it. But it ended as if she will more than likely write another one, which I of course will have to read and see where Astrid goes from here. "

" Vagueness, ARC-style: I did not AT ALL expect this to go where it did. I'm relatively happy with that place, and it was definitely done effectively. But I need a third for real satisfaction! "

" Won't reveal anything since this is not out till October (I read an ARC that I was lucky to receive at BEA) - but let me just say this was the perfect sequel to Rampant. Ascendant is full of action and suspense, and more than lives up to the high expectations that are held by fans of Rampant. "
