Verne's most outrageous "voyage extraordinaire" - a hasty world tour taken up on a gentlemen's club wager! Mr. Phileas Fogg, master of precision, enters into the strangest wager ever made over the whist table - that he will circle the globe in 80 days. The news astounds Jean Passepartout, sometime wandering minstrel, bareback rider, funambulist, gymnast and fireman, now turned valet to Mr. Fogg in the expectancy of a quiet and well-regulated life. For the next 80 days, their lives are anything but quiet or well-regulated. Jules Verne preferred to call himself an author of "voyages extraordinaires." An extraordinary voyage it is, from Fogg's announcement to Passepartout that they are to "leave for Dover in ten minutes," to his triumphant return to the Reform Club at the last second! " Phileas Fogg, a seemingly straightforward man who lives by the tick of the clock, sets off spontaneously to travel around the world. He concidentally sets off on his journey after the bank is robbed, and he wagers a large sum with his associates at the Reform Club that he can arrive back home in 80 days. He is accompanied by his valet Passepartout, and followed by police detective Fix, who is convinced Fogg is the bank thief. They have many adventures and are joined along the way by Miss Aouda, a young lady whose life they save in India. This book is a classic, and I found it interesting, but it did not captivate my attention. "

" I had to read this book in class this past year and I did not enjoy myself at all. I often day dreamed and went off track because, for me, the writing was hard to understand. However, I thought the very end was actually really fascinating and a good little twist. "

" Although I read all the other Jules Verne books back in high school, somehow I missed this one. So glad I got around to it - what an amazing book! Incredibly fresh and readable; hard to believe it was written close to 140 years ago. I just zipped though it, waiting eagerly to find what adventure every new day would bring. Highly recommended. A.
