Publisher Description

Among the towering red cliffs of Petra, like some monstrous swollen Buddha, sat the corpse of Mrs Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist was the only sign of the fatal injection that had killed her.

With only 24 hours available to solve the mystery, Hercule Poirot recalled a chance remark he'd overheard back in Jerusalem: 'You see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?' Mrs Boynton was, indeed, the most detestable woman he'd ever met.

Another Christie classic which takes a series of turns that will keep listeners guessing to the end. Starring John Moffatt as Hercule Poirot.

"One of my favorite Christie novels, and I'm so glad I rediscovered it. Like her best novels, it delves into the psychology of a domineering woman and the family that are under her control. Christie's descriptions of this woman are eerie without being overdramatic. The cast of characters is interesting as well. Usually I can kind of see the end coming (as I'm reading her novels for the second time through, having read them before as a child) but with this one, I was completely stumped."

" This is a weird one. Almost all of the book is devoted to the characters and the family, the mystery feels like an afterthought. It's like an interesting family drama with a random murder shoehorned in. It reads pretty awkward, but I did enjoy the family stuff. "

" First of all, why is there a snake on the cover? Second of all, if I hear the name "Boynton" one more time I'm going to scream! Ugh. In spite of those things this was a decent mystery. Not my favorite Poirot though. "

" Hercule Poirot, an archaeological setting, an intriguing family and a murder where everyone stands to gain and no one has an alibi. Perfect holiday reading (particularly in an Australian summer when you can image the heat in Petra all too easily!). "

" This is one of the first Agatha Christie's that I read and only deepened my admiration for Poirot and his "little gray cells." I have also seen a couple of screen adaptations of this book and none of them do justice to the malevolence of Mrs. Boynton! I particularly enjoy Poirot's adventures abroad and this one is full of Christie drama. "

" I think I saw a recent movie version of this, but they changed so much that I almost didn't believe I'd really seen it. Even the "guilty" party was changed. The book is better--less melodramatic, although the old woman is still evil. And a nice little epilogue, too. "

" One of my favorite Christies. The victim so obviously deserves to die; the death is rapid and painless. What more could a fan of cozy mysteries want? And we have the added bonus a mideastern background, with most of the action taking place in Petra, the rose-red city. A fun book. "
