Based on the epic videogame from BioWare and LucasArts.

The Sith Empire is in flux. The Emperor is missing, presumed dead, and an ambitious Sith lord's attempt to seize the throne has ended fatally. Still, Darth Karrid, commander of the fearsome Imperial battle cruiser Ascendant Spear, continues her relentless efforts to achieve total Sith domination of the galaxy.

But Karrid's ruthless determination is more than matched in the steely resolve of Theron Shan, whose unfinished business with the Empire could change the course of the war for good. Though the son of a Jedi master, Theron does not wield the Force - but like his renowned mother, the spirit of rebellion is in his blood. As a top covert agent for the Republic, he struck a crucial blow against the Empire by exposing and destroying a Sith superweapon arsenal - which makes him the ideal operative for a daring and dangerous mission to end Ascendant Spear's reign of terror.

Joined by hot-headed smuggler Teff'ith, with whom he has an inexplicable bond, and wise Jedi warrior Gnost-Dural, Darth Karrid's former master, Theron must match wits and weapons with a battle-tested crew of the most cold-blooded dark-side disciples. But time is brutally short. And if they don't seize their one chance to succeed, they will surely have countless opportunities to die.

" Very enjoyable read, and works better as a stand-alone than most of the SW:TOR books. Well paced story, likeable original characters. And I was so very happy about there being plenty of women on all levels and both sides of the conflict in a perfectly casual way, no Smurfette Principle :) Very minor quibble -- I read the comic preceeding this book and found it very refreshing to have the protagonist being non-angsty and entirely mentally balanced about being adopted. A rare thing to see! I get the feeling the author of this book struggled with that bit... hero came dangerously close to the edge of woe-is-me-I'm-having-dad-issues on a couple of occasions, and quite needlessly so. Nearly took it down to 4 stars for that, but went up to 5 again after considering how few other Star Wars books feature women in anything other than extraordinary roles. (It even passes the Bechdel test, if there is such a thing for books.) That's worth a star on its own. "

" I grew up with Star Wars and am willing to grab and read anything about it. I was so glad when I got this book to add to my collection and happy to see that it ties in with the game, it's just another thing my nephew and I can discuss together. Old and new fans should get this because the bottom line is, it is well written. "

" Not as terrible as his sith based books, it's still kinda bland. "

" Good book. Havent been a big fan of old republic books but this one was good. Interesting characters good battles not to much politics and ancillary characters. "

" Meh. Karpyshyn's slipping. This was uncompelling reading and nowhere near the calibre of his Darth Bane books. The end battle made it somewhat worth reading to the end. Somewhat. "

" Good story, just a little short @ 286 pages. I think the author could have put more detail into the scenes. "

" The story has all the essential Star Wars attractions built in, space travel, slicing, Jedi and an evil ass Sith. Unfortunately the main battle and a Jedi having a child were the only exciting and interesting parts to the book. The rest was just filler in my opinion. "

" It was a solid story, but I felt like the ending was much stronger than the earlier parts of the book. For a long time the book tracked along without any specific idea on where it was heading. I liked it. It was a very fun story. But it wasn't great. "
