Eleven-year old orphan Anne Shirley has red hair, a vivid imagination and cannot stop talking. Quite a shock for old Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert who wanted a boy to help them on the farm... Anne is soon the talk of the town with her funny ways and endless adventures, but it is not long before she has won the hearts of everyone. This classic story is set in Canada at the beginning of the 20th century and is one of the most enduring favorites of children's literature. Download and start listening now!

" As I started this book, I realized I had only read the first couple chapters as a teenager. I think when I was younger the flowery imagery was a turn-off to me with too many words to describe a tree. But now, as an older adult, I fell in love with Anne's way of thinking and describing the world around her. This book is not really a "fast read" but after the first half of the book, it was hard to put down. "

" I liked the movies much better than the books. "

" Anne was a constant companion throughout my childhood. I quickly devoured Anne of Green Gables, followed by Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island. There are additional books about Anne, but they pale in comparison to the first three. Anne of Green Gables tells of orphan Anne Shirley's adoption after many years of going from foster home to foster home. Despite the hardships of her young life, Anne is lively, affectionate, curious, and highly intelligent. The story is told somewhat episodically, with Anne getting into some sort of scrape or adventure - many coming with the lesson to curb her imagination, which she never actually does - in each chapter. This is a classic worth reading at any age. Anne does grow and develop, but the lessons of the book (because there are always lessons, it seems, in children's literature) are not handled as pedantically as one might expect considering the time that the book was written and that L. M. Montgomery was a Presbyterian minister's wife. "

" Read this series many times as a kid and loved it. Read it again recently and loved it all over again. "
