Listener Opinions

" As I started this book, I realized I had only read the first couple chapters as a teenager. I think when I was younger the flowery imagery was a turn-off to me with too many words to describe a tree. But now, as an older adult, I fell in love with Anne's way of thinking and describing the world around her. This book is not really a "fast read" but after the first half of the book, it was hard to put down. "

" I liked the movies much better than the books. "

" Anne was a constant companion throughout my childhood. I quickly devoured Anne of Green Gables, followed by Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island. There are additional books about Anne, but they pale in comparison to the first three. Anne of Green Gables tells of orphan Anne Shirley's adoption after many years of going from foster home to foster home. Despite the hardships of her young life, Anne is lively, affectionate, curious, and highly intelligent. The story is told somewhat episodically, with Anne getting into some sort of scrape or adventure - many coming with the lesson to curb her imagination, which she never actually does - in each chapter. This is a classic worth reading at any age. Anne does grow and develop, but the lessons of the book (because there are always lessons, it seems, in children's literature) are not handled as pedantically as one might expect considering the time that the book was written and that L. M. Montgomery was a Presbyterian minister's wife. "

" Definitely a must have series in the classrooms. I feel that many students can identify with some part of who anne of green gables was. i believe that this series would be great to give to third grade students who are starting to read chapter books and enjoy the art of reading series. "

" Read it because it is one of my wife's favorites. I can see why. Anne is a noble character who matures gracefully from a young girl into a circumspect woman, for whom there are hard choices but hope. "

" One of my childhood literary heroes. The biggest complement my husband ever paid me was that I was "just like her". Now, at 43, I'm revisiting her and finding that deep down, I still am and still can be. She's flawed and lovable and brave. I hope I can still be that. "

" This is one of the few books from childhood that does not disappoint when rereading it as an adult. Anne can get long winded - especially early on but the basic spirit and readability of the story was as good if not better than I remembered. Looking forward to starting Anne of Avonlea. "
