This is the second story in the Anne of Green Gables series. Skinny little red-haired Anne has changed into a pretty 16-year-old and is all grown up - well, sort of grown up. The story opens with Anne as a school teacher at Avonlea school. When Anne reached the school that first morning, she was confronted by prim rows of shining morning faces. She had sat up until nearly midnight composing a speech which she had revised and improved painstakingly. It was a wonderful speech with fine ideas. And then, she couldn't remember it!

Listener Opinions

" Good but I felt a little cheated since in the movies, this is where she ends up with Gilbert and they spent half the time with some Improvement Society which I felt was a little humdrum. Other than that the book is as beautifully written as the first. "

" I should have listened to Stephen when he reported that while Anne of Green Gables is delightful and fun and a lovely tale of relationships built, Anne of Avonlea is frightfully dull and has no character development and no real plot. Granted, it's not really supposed to be a plot driven novel, being instead episodic, but that's no excuse for being dull. That is all. "

" I wanted to finish reading this book, but I could NOT find the time, so I am like 3/4 of the way through it. :D :D My dad started this thing for us where if we read a minimum of 150 pages per week, we get $15, and we get bonuses and stuff, so I'm going to be reading a lot of books!!! I hope to get this one finished. "

" You never know how a series will go but I just want to keep reading about Anne. It's been hard to try and slow myself down since I want to savor the story, but Anne of the Island is just waiting for me. "

" I read this when I was in my early teens and it was so wonderful to be swept away to a new place and in the eyes of a different person. I loved that is was fun yet so grounded in reality. the characters and setting were wonderful and the language was descriptive enough you could imagine being there. "
