Listener Opinions

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Marie | 2/19/2014

" Sweet young adult novel (by one of my favorite singer-songwriter/philosophers) about a girl whose single dad becomes ill, and she comes to appreciate the extended family of her dad's friends. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Melody | 2/7/2014

" Williams is better known as a singer/songwriter than as an author, but she's begun very well. Amalee is an engaging 11-year-old girl who is trying to find herself among a crowd of sixth-graders, not to mention her dad's family-like web of dear friends. And then her dad gets sick, and the book really takes wing. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Melany | 1/17/2014

" Funny book with real middle school problems. Childish I would say but it's a good book. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Heidi | 1/7/2014

" Amalee is exactly the kind of book young preteen and teenage girls should be reading. The characterization of the heroine is wonderful and despite the fact that I haven't been that age for a decade I could still remember clearly having the same thoughts and feelings about life. Amalee is a realistic portrayal of a young girl discovering who she is and a great reminder that even us adults don't have everything together at all times either. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Rebekah | 12/30/2013

" What a wonderful story. Amalee is a character with whom many girls are able to relate. This book is poignant and very nicely written. "

" Tackles some difficult topics for a young teen and there were some great moments. It got a little preachy/ psychoanalytic at times. Not bad. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Kammy | 12/10/2013

" Really 3 1/2. I think this is a sweet short book, and has some very relatable themes for middle school girls. I liked the writing style too. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Danie P. | 11/24/2013

" Her dad is sick and his four best friends take turn taking care of Amalee. Amalee reacts by withdrawing from her friends and becoming a mean girl of sorts. This book would be great for a book discussion for 4-6 graders. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Piper Gilkison | 11/20/2013

" I loved this tragic tale of a girls life! Dar Williams is an amazing singer and author!!! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Kaia | 11/9/2013

" I listened to this book on my drive to and from Chicago yesterday. I'm so glad Dar read it. It's a sweet book, filled with the sorts of characters I'd imagine Dar would surround her own daughter with. I could hear traces of her songs in it, and it made me smile. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Elizabeth Vaccaro | 9/11/2013

" Amalee starts a new school and finds that she has become a mean girl. Her father is sick, her father's friends are taking over her house, and she does not know what to do. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 evelyn | 4/14/2013

" Writing teacher recommended it because the character I was writing reminded her of this. It was charming and adorable and I am more than happy to be compared to it. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Nikki | 4/14/2013

" Dar Williams is one of my favourite singers, so naturally I was intrigued that she'd written a book. It's not a massive tome, and it's nothing groundbreaking, but it's still interesting and fun to read. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Gina | 3/8/2013

" I don't really remember much about this book 'cept that it was awesom and that the girl (Amalee)'s father gets mucho sick and that she pushes a meanie down the stairwell and gets sued. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lisa | 2/5/2013

" A cutesy book by a folk singer that I really enjoy - a look into the life of an 11 year old girl being raised by her father and his eccentric friends. Things get challenging for them when her father gets sick. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Ginger | 1/20/2013

" Great Singer/Songwriter, great first book for her. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Meghan | 11/25/2012

" Cute, but not as wonderful and sparkly and magical as her music. The three hours it takes to read it is better spent listening to The Honesty Room over and over. But it was good, and maybe you could read it while listening to one of Dar Williams's albums and that'd be OK, too. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lalah | 10/2/2012

" Fiction for the adolescent girl in your life. I enjoyed her writing style and her depiction of what I think is probably a pretty accurate portrayal of 11-14 yr old angst. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Amy | 7/15/2012

" I love Dar Williams' music but I didn't like this book. It didn't hold my interest at all. But I'll keep my copy of the book because I bought it at her concert and she signed it for me! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Frenchhornbook | 11/1/2011

" I read this book lying on a bunk bed in South Carolina and that is how I will always remember it. My mom wanted me to go out and play, but I had not brought along a backpack full of books for nothing. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Meara | 8/19/2011

" Amalee's life just became a mess! Everything she knew was just ruined. Suddenly, a talk with the teachers in school, and a talk with the mean kid's parents, and everything turned out better than it ever had been! I am relieved for her! :) "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Meg | 8/3/2011

" I love the songwriter....but the book was not realistic. "
