Dufty Dufty Biddle & Dunn is a small firm of provincial solicitors in the English Midland town of Hockham, catering for the legal needs of the local population. No more, no less. Charles Dufty founded the practice 50 years ago, and still acts as a consultant to his son Hugo, the senior resident partner, who has ambitions to expand the firm. The Duftys take on cases that most modern firms wouldn't even look at, yet before you know it, the problem is solved. Dufty's life experience means he doesn't need to use clever legal strategies or try to outwit the opposition.
In fact as far as he is concerned, there is no opposition - just people. A word here, a nod there, a small adjustment in the right place are all that is required. Most of the locals of Hockham have passed through the offices for some reason - whether a business transaction, a house sale or purchase, a dispute over a will, a neighbour dispute, a marriage break-up, or a spot of trouble with the police.
