Alanna of Trebond is no ordinary girl: her dream is to become a knight. So she disguises herself as a boy and begins training at the palace of King Roald. Alanna quickly finds out that the road to knighthood is not an easy one, but her skills and stubbornness help her become friends with Prince Jonathan and his followers. At the same time, Alanna makes an enemy of the prince's uncle, the overly charming Duke Roger.

"In this book I think it's about you need courage to do something, and that sometimes lying is better than telling the truth. Because I think that when Alanna first got bullied she didn't give up that she was weaker than the bully, she decide to fight back. Alanna also lied that she's a boy and so she can be a knight and she lied that she hates swimming or else she needs to swim and others will know that Alanna is a she. So I think that you need courage to do something that you wanted, and lying is better than telling the truth, but don't lie every time."

" Very cliche, boring main character, plot moves along too quickly, and everything happens too easily for Alana. Also, the ending was just so... irrelevant to me. "

" This is so god damn typical. I hear about a young adult fantasy series on NPR, something to do with the word "lioness," so I order this piece of shit. Turns out I wanted the Lyonesse, not Lioness series, as this is straight up written for a ten year old girl. Of course, I finished it anyway and ordered the next one. I need to know if she shacks up with Prince Jonathan. "

" this is the first YA book that ever got me interested d in reading. There's a daring heroin, Alanna, who switches places with her twin brother in order for her to pursue her dreams of becoming a knight;this is totally unheard of in her era. "

" I wish I had read this long ago, and am glad that my daughter discovered it at about age 10 with no help from me. It strikes me as a good bridge for independent readers between C.S. Lewis' The Horse and His Boy, and Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown. "
