Charlotte Arkendale was quite sure she knew all there was to know about men. After all, she'd made a highly lucrative career out of steering marriage-minded women away from untrustworthy members of the opposite sex. But nothing in Charlotte's considerable experience had prepared her for the arresting stranger who appeared on her doorstep to apply for the position of her new man-of-affairs.He claimed to be a respectable gentleman - discreet, unassuming, ordinary to the point of being dull. Yet something about the set of Mr. St. Ives's broad shoulders and the unrelenting determination that smoldered in the depths of his amber eyes warned Charlotte to be wary. For the strong-minded beauty was already embroiled in a wealth of danger. Two months earlier, Miss Drusilla Heskett had become on of Charlotte's clients. Now the woman was dead, murdered in her own home, and Charlotte feared that the killer may have been one of the suitors she herself had advised Miss Heskett to reject. Still, with the right man by her side, Charlotte was certain she could uncover the truth and bring Drusilla's killer to justice. But was the enigmatic St. Ives Mr. Right...or Mr. Wrong? " I listened to this one because I needed a BOT for the car and have enjoyed the Arcane Society series by Quick/Krentz and I really enjoyed this one. Charlotte is a business-minded woman who investigates the backgrounds of perspective grooms for women who have money. When one of her clients is murdered, she feels it is her duty to investigate and find out who did it. She hires a new "Man of Affairs" to double as a body guard in order to help her accomplish her task. But Baxter has a hidden agenda of his own... "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Heidi | 2/2/2014

" Regency murder mystery with a dose of romance... easy read-- perfect for a quiet Sunday evening. Love that the characters are less than perfect and fairly witty to boot. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 LibraryLass | 1/29/2014

" As always, another very satisfying read from this author. When I am in a reading funk I always turn to AQ for a story that will cheer me and get me back in the zone. Love her writing to pieces. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Catrina | 1/26/2014

" It would have gotten 4 stars if she hadn't had mentioned Zamar. Interesting alchemy references. Kind of reminded me of The Arcane Society novels. "

" So this is the second Amanda Quick book I have read. It was in the same flighty manner as Deception and I did notice Quicks theme of strong, independant women, almost to the point of being unfeminine. Not sure I really liked this one.... On to Mystique... We'll see. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Maryam | 1/15/2014

" Uffffffff....... This one was tooooooooooo long :/ nice story but it was stretched too much! I didn't read any other Amanda's book after reading this one. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jane (PS) | 1/12/2014

" Another good story by Amanda Quick. These are formulatic, but AQ is still able to introduce new angles to her story and sufficiently vary the characters so that it isn't the same story each time. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sheri | 1/3/2014

" I kinda really like the hero of this story. He was kinda a geek and so socially awkward it made me really sympathize with him. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lara | 12/25/2013

" Well, this book was entertaining, if somewhat more unrealistic than the others. I hadn't read it yet, and was pleased that some of the typical scenes that show up in the author's historicals were not present here. Or, they were modified in some way. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Lychee | 12/13/2013

" One of her earlier books, I believe, and it seemed so. The first of her books that I've had to renew twice and still didn't finish. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kez | 12/10/2013

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Brianna | 1/19/2013

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Andrea | 6/3/2012

" Sigh.......it was funny but also a corny trite romance novel with a dash of advernture and suspense. Honestly if the leads weren't so flat or the romance scenes were better written I'd have enjoyed this book a whole lot more. This is not at all what I expected from such a talanted author. "

" I like when the guy is set on seducing the girl. Charlotte does not expect Baxter and is kind of thrown off guard, considering how she is so suspicious of men. I kind of like this about her. Still, this story feel kind of flat for me. It was just okay for me. "

" Remarkably similar to "Deception" but everything you'd expect from a Quick novel - easy, fluffy, engaging. Interesting look at mesmerism, alchemy, and the rise of scientific enquiry. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Joy | 8/2/2011

" I like Quick/Krentz's characters, but sometimes it sure does seem like she uses the same 6-8 character types over and over again. I mean, didn't she just change some names and details and pretty much publish this as The Perfect Poison? "
