Publisher Description

Aesop, an ancient Greek poet who was sold into slavery in the early sixth century BC, relied on animal stories to convey his key points to his masters in court. Aesop's Fables are classic, memorable morality plays in which amusing animal characters drive home thought-provoking morals to generations of listeners and modern-day audiences. They illustrate what was fundamental to Greek culture, yet their appeal lies in logic we still understand. Translated into countless languages and familiar to people around the world, Aesop's fables never tarnish despite being told again and again.

"Nothing beats the original Aesop fables, so read those as opposed to the watered-down ones they give kids. There seems to be a clever way to answer many of life's questions and while not always agreeable, you can see why it might be thought as such. These stories are good for young and old alike."

" A good collection of short stories told by animals and about animals. Although it may seem a children book, any adult can actually learn a good deal from it. Also, interestingly enough, I discovered that it is the origin of many famous sayings and metaphors that we do use in our daily life. "

" I remember reading these as a child and finding them much more profound. I recently read most of this collection and was a little disappointed that most didn't seem as important or encouraging as one may like. In fact the fables are often contradictory. I had originally picked up the fables as a potential source for illustration subjects, but didn't even find much of interest on that front. "

" An interesting, if repetitive, read. Very different morality than we see in "fables" (and I'm thinking kid's stories) today. Aesop was all about knowing your place in society and playing your role. Not so much with the "you can do ANYTHING" messages we see today. "
