" For a book on the politics of Abraham Lincoln, this is good. Shows how he used the men who were his rivals for the US Presidency. You can see the gift Lincoln had of insight to handle people and problems. Also covers his early history, his campaigning for different offices, and death "

" An amazing and detailed portrait of Lincoln and his rivals/colleagues and the complex issues they faced. I am absolutely blown away by the Lincoln, Seward, Stanton, et al. A must read, especially given our country's challenges today. "

" Learned a lot about the civil war and leadership in general. Goodwin described the men in a way that makes them understandable even by people who lived 150+ years after they did. Highly recommend. "

" Ok, first thing you need to know is that it's 700 pages long. Second thing to know is that it's a really great 700 pages. So well told, you really stay engaged through the whole thing, and I learned so much! I'm really grateful to people who can make history so approachable by the non-scholar, so that we can have the chance to learn from our past and understand what a rich heritage we have. If anyone else reads it, I'd love to discuss it! "

" Long and heavy at times, but a great book. This reads like a novel, not a history book, though it is packed with history. Lincoln and his genius really comes to light. I also learned quite a bit about others of that time I thought I knew of, but didn't really. Well worth the read. "

" An amazing look at Lincoln and the men who shaped the country during the Civil War. The book looks in depth at his rivals who made up his cabinet and who grew to respect and admire a man whose background was nothing like theirs. "

" I started this just before going to see the movie "Lincoln" and while the movie covered only a small part of what the book does; and the book hardly went into the manuverings to pass the 13th Amendment to the extent that the movie does--having seen the movie made it easy to visualize these men. "
